Has your "inner fire" ever just gone out? How does one rekindle such things?

Albert Schweitzer once said, "In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit."

I think my inner fire has gone out. I am normally a pretty out going, giving, strong, open minded and kind spirit. Lately I find I just feel tired and weary with people, the ways of the world and my own life. I have done some great things, experienced great love and great loss and sacrificed much for the greater good. Now I just feel numb. Has this happened to you? How did you find a spark to rekindle your "inner fire"? Did it just happen or did you have to seek it out? What might I try to find it again?

PS: I am not talking about depression or other mental health issues and not seeking religious advice either, please; I am talking about inner drive, passion and those things that compel us to do certain things or follow certain paths in our lives.

In my life, when this happens I call it a dark night of the soul. This is a time when there is a lesson to be learned. I usually hunker down when I know this is happening and figure out what the lesson is for me. When I face it full on and figure out how it fits in my life, I then put it behind me and the light comes back on and the inner fire lights. :)

I feel like I always had trouble getting my fire lit. I struggled with life for a long time, trying to find things that made my life feel worthwhile. I found Jesus and God, that fire hasn't been out since then, and there are days where it roars and blazes.

  • yes, mine went out when my son died in 2001.

I never have been able to rekindle it. But I do have moments

when it briefly lights. When I look at something beautiful in nature, or when my sports team wins, little things like that.

I also find comfort in memories, I've done lots of things in my life and I relive them in my mind -- sometimes this starts a small stirring.

A small fire starts when I see how man's excesses are destroying the planet. And some political issues.

Sometimes we just need rest and the way becomes more clear. "Better to burn out than fade away" I wonder what Neil Young would say about that now.

Force yourself to smile. Force yourself to leave the house, be with people, smile, laugh. Pretty soon it will come back.

Yes, it's a down period. We all have them. And, it is mild depression. It'll come back for you. But, yes you will need to seek it out and make it happen.
