Why did my employer put me on probation?

My job is very hard and frought with danger. I constantly have to go into dangerous neighborhoods. I have been accosted, I have witnessed gun battles. Yet, when I made a big clerical error, none of my dedication was considered and I was put on probation with a strong threat of termination. I have worked for this company about 4 years and my work is at minimum satisfactory. Why was my work record not considered? Why is the culture in this country (USA) so poor that my job is in jeopardy for one mistake?

Update:

thank you for some heartfelt answers. Some very good points made

There's a saying in America..."crap rolls down hill." Chances are, your boss is being threatened with being fired as well. He/she is probably just giving you the same threat he/she got. Give it some time, "lay low," and wait for things to calm. However, you might want to get a resume ready just in case. It's always better safe than sorry. Also, you should document all of this just in case there is ever a disputed unemployment claim.

Loyalty at work is at an all-time low because the supervisors feel threatened too. If you hadn't been punished severely enough, your superiors may have been fired for not catching the error, or not having sufficient controls in place to prevent it from occurring.

The way to go is to decide that 'this, too shall pass' and don't sweat it. When your probation is over, perhaps consider finding a less thrilling job, and take up some interesting hobbies so that you don't have to put your life on the line to do your work.

    Good luck!

You are right about the culture, and America is going through another hardening of the arteries like in 1968 and beyond during and because of the Vietnam War.

When our leadership uses are military without restraint against civilian targets, the sense of hope in our culture begins to drain out, and we are at that point. The Country is exhausted, and the people are feeling vulnerable and in crisis.

Another issue that is now critical is the nearly dead field of regulating business or the rot coming off the body politic, and as a result, the goal of winning at any cost is the underlying beam and only principle of our society at the moment. It is dog eat dog. It is lie to live and cheat is survive. It is use dogmatic religious ideas to kill the weak and to drain the spirit of America.

Your employer is acting the way he is being told to act by other associates. The idea that you are human and that some balance needs to used in evaluating your job performance went out the window when economist sold the conservatives the idea that the way to promote profits is to push employees into working harder and longer for less income.

They have hopefully about come to the end of their rope in this bankrupt path of least resistance. I hope this helps.

Rule: In today's work world, the employer sets the rules of the game, so you have to learn how to play the game which means you have stop thinking that the employer is out to take care of you. He/She is not. Once you get that in your head, then remember that the employer is pushing you all the time to trying and get to more productivity out of you and others. He wants you to feel threatened.

Lie, cheat and steal is their motto, so you have to play the game.

By the way, it does not have to be this way, and it has not always been this way, but when you have dog eat dog rules, then the lowest dog on the poll is the first to go, or get eaten.

Please don't dispare. This bunch of leaders are about to get the boot!

The bigger the company the less attention anyone pays to you. Most companies now are so scared of employees taking them to court over labor issues in case someone does end up getting fired, that they have choosen to document any error you may make. I would not take it serious. You say it was a big mistake, but you don't give details. Pucker up and do some **** kissing until things blow over! It will be OK.

You made a big error. You're learning from your mistake now. You now have time to think over what you did and work on not doing it again.

It was one of three reasons:

They are looking for a way to get rid of you.

They were looking for a way to deny your next raise.

It was a huge error that will cost them money.

Gee, all three have to do with money...what do ya know.

Welcome to working for the man, you are a disposable asset that can be replaced easily, cheaply and quickly. Sucks doesn't it?

Sounds rather harsh to me. You might consider finding a different place to work where you will be appreciated.
