The Department of Corrections run the prison system in your state/government/city. Each Police station has it's own small jail (normally) but doesn't have corrections officers there. Corrections officers are the men and women that maintain Prisons and Correctional Institutions.

In rural counties, the Sheriff's Department runs the county jail system, with deputies serving as guards.
At a certain point, as the jail population grows, it becomes cheaper to establish a separate DOC. Prison guards receive less training and require less education than does a full fledged LEO and consequently earn less (considerably less, in fact).
The DOC usually is under the control of the Sheriff, and very often, deputies supervise the prison guards.
