When pre-washing denim, how do I keep it from bleeding?

The fabric is a cotton denim and white stripes (like train conductors wear). I've tried washing it on the gentle cycle in cold water and that made it all turn blue. Any ideas of how to keep the colors separate? Or maybe suggest a website with answers.

Thanks.

They say that if you put 1/2 cup of white vinegar into the wash water it will seal in the color.

Or maybe one of those color catchers for laundry?

same as whats up in spite of the indisputable fact that the trick is: - Load clothing: - liquid detergent - on the softener (ur decision of heady scent) enable the laundry to stay for a minimum of 30 minutes on the water. do not enable laundry to proceed, make certain the door is open to make the water stay with the softener. it really is the trick!!!!! - 4-5 dryer sheets

I heard Vinegar works good, only tried it once, seemed to work, on mine, but my shirt was a solid color, and I was trying to stop it from fading.
