What do you think about schools making classes gender separated?

Lately some schools have been studying the effects on academic performance that having all boy and all girl classes can have. It seems that both sexes are more likely to excel in certain subjects when they don't have to deal with hormones and etc.

Well where i live the majority or secondary schools (high schools) are single sex. I went to a single sex school for two years and i have to say i am against the idea, especially at that age. I also don't think it would work well with younger children.

Yes, classes may concentrate more in some lessons, but both sexes then miss out on learning how to fully communicate with the opposite sex. It creates a divide and being around boys or girls then becomes a big deal.

When many many girls are together they get bitchy and they get obsessed with seeing guys. When many guys are together they seem to cause much more trouble.

Maybe the occasional class would work well, but i'm not a fan of the idea. I don't think it does make that much of a difference, as you are always going to get students who concentrate on work and students who don't, regardless of whether they are around the opposite sex or not.

Big nono. Experts suppsoedly say that males and females think differently, but we're not thinking about how transgendered minds and tomboys and sissyboys think.... They, in particular, need to be exposed to enviornments that incorporate both genders. How on earth could a girlyboy survive in a testosterone filled room?

Im a girl, im girly, i dont wanna be in an all girls enviornment. Men often put input into class discussions that no female could ever think of. You're cutting yourself short of opinions and areas of reasoning if you're going for the single sex classrooms.

Just take a minute to think about it... you'll agree.

Depends on the school, teachers, students and ages, really.

I like the idea of gender-specific classes in the younger years, but the classes should integrate after primary school for social purposes.

As "difficult" as they are, I could honestly say that I'd be quite happy teaching a class of boys.

I can see the pros and cons. (and what a coincidence, I just saw an episode of the simpsons about this)

As a female I have seen too many smart girls lose their penchant for education because they become too involved with boys at a young age. AS for boys, they become too disruptive in order to impress girls.

Both sexes have to deal with pressure and confindence problems during their "awkward" phases and this may help ease their puberty stage.

    But....

If they are not allowed to socialize with the opposite sex then that could lead to social problems when they are older. As adults they have to face dealing with the opposite sex and school would not allow then to socialize and learn how to handle it at such a young age.

No matter what I see there are going to be noth negative and positive ramifications.

I have mixed feelings about this. Research shows that students perform better in gender-specific schools. The conjecture is that the removal of the sexual dynamic allows students to focus more on their studies; and that teachers tend to treat males and females differently in the classroom (unconsciously, of course). However, you're going to have to learn to deal with the distraction of the opposite sex at some point.

then the school must been on crack or something. I think its unfair. I'm always getting good grades, Being in a room with opposite sex doesn't bother me. Those some schools that are studying probably got to stop otherwise they would have battles between two sexes or sexes being discriminating and nonrespecful.

Hormones on other hand? That's crrazy!

That is true. With nobody from the other sex in class, it helps with focus. The kids are more free to answer questions without judgment from the opposite sex.

i think that having gender separated classes would suck since we should be able to be around the other gender and some of the things that the opposite gender does helps people remember stuff easier

...sounds a bit...grey..and dull..and cold. Reminds me of something that would be done in some sick, attempted- eutopia achieving society where they took all the color out of the world like in the book, 'The Giver'...did they study the amount of suicides and drop-out rates that increased in those schools also, or did they leave that part out. if they took the girls outta my school I sure wouldn't be going.

I think boys and girls should be taught in same class. Who is to say they would get the same teaching.
