Will a laptop battery lose charge if it's plugged in all the time?

I use my laptop everyday at home so it's always plugged in. I rarely ever have to unplug it. Will the battery lose charge?

Also, is it ok to keep the laptop on all the time like a regular computer? Am I shortening it's life by doing this?

Update:

I see what you are all saying. But my laptop is Gateway MX7118 and it has an icon showing that I am using electricty rather than the battery. You still think I have to not keep it plugged all the time?

There is no problem leaving it plugged in all the time. However every couple of weeks its a good idea to drain it completely (this goes for most rechargeble batterites) You do that by changing the settings under power management so that it does not shut down at all. That way the battery completely drains and then plug it back it. If you keep doing this your battery will have a long life.

By the way I too have a gateway and after 2 years it still holds about 3 hours charge.

My Gateway tech support told me to turn mine off if I will be away from my laptop more than 2 hours. I don't. I have stand by set at 30 min. and no problem. I am pretty sure the lithium batteries cannot be overcharged.

Umm if its plugged in it wont lose charge, if you unplug the charger and keep using till your batterey dies then your computer will die too. So It wont matter plugging in all the time, but I recomment only plug when needed, because charger and battery get hot too fast.

If you don't take your laptop to travel, then just take the battery out and put it in a safe place where temperature does not change so much.

yeah all batteries will lose charge. they just suck like that. and if you leave it on a lot it will probly start messing up within 2 or 3 years. also if you turn it on and off alot that will mess it up eventualy but that will take a long while.
