Sherlock Holmes and jack the ripper?

This is more complex than it seems.

Arthur Conan Doyle never wrote anything in which Jack the Ripper and Sherlock Holmes encounter each other. However since Doyle's death there have been other authors who have, most famously the novel and movie "Murder By Decree". There is also at least one work in which Jack the Ripper and Sherlock Holmes are one and the same person!

Arthur Conan Doyle, however, did comment on the Jack the Ripper case in real life. In 1888 he theorized that Jack the Ripper disguised himself as a woman in order to get close to his victims and to escape after the crimes.

Arthur Conan Doyle has occasionally been suggested as a suspect in the crimes himself, although there has never been any convincing proof put forward, and he is not considered a serious candidate for the Ripper.

Doyle (and therefore Holmes) and Jack the Ripper inhabited the same sphere in time and location which gave rise to the (ridiculous) theory that the Ripper and Holmes were the same person. This is obviously ridiculous as Holmes is fictional and the killer was not.

There are also Holmesian pastiches that have the detective on the trail of the killer, or reveal him to be the killer or reveal Watson as the murderer.

Doyle actually never made mention of Jack the Ripper in the canon.

Very good answer by Magpieix above. Additionally to this, however, Arthur Conan Doyle did take part in a tour of the Ripper murder sites on April 19th 1905. The tour was organised by S. Ingleby Oddie, the Coroner for Central London, on behalf of the Crimes Club of which Doyle was a member.

The tour was led by Dr Gordon Brown, the City of London Police Surgeon who had performed the autopsy on Ripper victim Catherine Eddowes.

Yes. Jack the Ripper did exist and Sherlock Holmes did not exist AT THE SAME TIME. Makes you think, doesn't it?

Seriously, no. Sherlock is fictional whereas unfortunatley for his victims Jack was not.

Holmes was too busy with Moriarty to bother with Jolly Jack...Conan Doyle was too busy hanging out with Alaister Crowley to actually solve any real crimes.
