Should we require that voters have some understanding of the issues prior to allowing them to vote?

I recently watched a program that alleged Jessie Jackson loaded up a bus load of people, who were not registered, and offered them money to get on this bus and go vote. I can't imagine this is not considered voter fraud. These people had no intention of voitng (ie they didn't care about the elections or issues enough to vote on their own). Why should their vote count? Isn't it illegal to BUY a vote? Isn't it illegal to PAY someone to vote for you or someone you want in office? Why wasn't Mr Jackson arrested?

I share in your emotion but who determines what counts as "informed?" Biggots used this same reasoning as an excuse to keep blacks out of the voting booth. That has left a sour taste in our mouths for any program like you are refering to.

Jesse Jackson couldn't know for sure how these people would vote, but he probably knew what odds were.

It seems like paying a person to vote should be illegal. One state is considering voting in a tax lottery where one voter after an election will win the jackpot. I want more voters out there, too, but it seems like this approach would only increase the number of uninformed voters and that doesn't sound good to me!

Boy Scouts are going to bend over for the gay foyer, pardon the pun. in the event that they do no longer, the gay foyer will do what prepared Jew lobbies do and that's to establish boycotts and use their get right of entry to to the media to smear the corporation so their investment dries up. The Boy Scouts ought to have held rapid, caught to their values and not even entertained the gay lobbies stupid concepts of selection or political correctness interior the 1st place. the only subject that the Boy Scouts can do at this element is be to furnish to pay off the gay lobbies with some donations so they are going to bypass away and attempt to stress another corporation into tolerating them. the concern is, the gay foyer has already infiltrated maximum different classic businesses such with the aid of fact the NFL, the Methodist church, Disney topic parks, the ordinary public college gadget (via "No place For Hate") and ninety 9.9% of the media so the Boy Scouts are between the final carry outs.

First, people on all parts of the spectrum have been doing this for years. I see people have totally forgotten Christie Whitman when she ran for NJ Governor, was found to have given "walking around money" to community leaders to help in her election. Was she arrested? Of course not., but anytime you have a polarizing figure like Jesse Jackson, he should be burned at the stake. He's not my favorite person, but I'm not sure its helpful to personalize issues like this. I think that that the beauty of the democracy we have is that Government should play no role in making sure that people understand issues--people should be trusted to make up their own minds--but understand clearly that when they don't what the pitfalls are.

I dont know the legality of this case but surely every person has a legal right to vote! If they get swayed then thats not their fault and you cant take away their voting rights because of it! If only peole who understood issues could vote where do you draw the line? You'd end up with an intellectual elite of Politics students doing all the decision making....now theres an idea

He wasnt arrested becuase the program ALLEGED he did this.

It is impossible to draw a line to determine if you know the issues or not. Would you have to know ALL of them or just a select few? Which ones? It is our right as an american to vote, it is up to us to learn what we are voting for.

Sounds fraudulent to me. And shameful. But no, you can't require that people are "educated" prior to voting - who would determine what constitutes understanding the issues? Too close to trying to indoctrinate people one way or another.

But shame on anyone who does not educate themselves, and shame on anyone who does not vote.

i agree,i recently heard about a lotto you can be entered in to encourage more people to vote, that's absurd,we need intelligent votes not someone who just goes down the line without even knowing what they are doing
