Might the immigration issue be a distraction from other more REAL problems?

There have been millions of illegal immigrants in this country for decades--let's all count them together--decades. It is a huge sector of the economy of cheap, underpaid labor.

People act as though this is a new issue, since it exploded back into the media about a year ago, and news and talk radio shows started blabbing about immigrants draining health and education services.

The money they DRAIN is pennies compared with the BILLIONS of dollars tax-payers spend each month on the war in Iraq. That is a real problem, bombing the crap out of people who cannot defend themselves, causing turmoil and civic unrest and war there.

Which is worse? Spending a little tax money to help sick people (American or otherwise)? or spending an OBSCENE amount of money on bombs and weapons to hit a defenseless country?

As A liberal I agree completely that the amount of money on what is an unjust war is obscene. However, the amount of money local, state, and federal agencies are spending on the illegal entrant problem is hardly acceptable. While it is true that there have always been problems with illegal entry, the last decade has seen this problem mushroom. It may be the same old problem but it is far worse than ever before. Couple a loosely guarded border with homeland security concerns and the economic burdens involved and you have a real problem.

Is it a distraction from more pressing problems? Perhaps. The loss of civil rights, the loss of habeus corpus, our dropping the ball in Afghanistan, the morass in Iraq and the criminal lack of a reasonable working health care system in this country are far more dire problems in my judgement. However, we can not downplay the fact that illegal entry is a serious problem that must be dealt with. Our government should and must eb able to deal with many sets of problems at one time.

This problem will not be dealt with though, not until our government goes after the company's (big and little, corporation and farm) that depend on hiring illegal entrants for their profits. We can build as many fences as there is metal available and people will come in while company after company recruits them, hires them and in some cases helps them gain entry. To go after these the coporations that hire these people would mean those same corporations would stop contributing to political campaigns. We'll see if that ever happens.

First we are not bombing a defenseless country into oblivion if we did that the war would have been over two years ago.

In my opinion we worry about not causing an excessive amount

of collateral damage to the point of needlessly costing American Lives.

Now on Immigration it bothers me when it starts to but a burden on services that I an American citizen pay part of each paycheck towards. these services are to help us when we need it.

But because of the illegal aliens who use the system without paying into it. I an American can't get the help I need when I try to apply. there is a right way to go about doing things and a wrong way. to move to a country and not do it the legal way is just wrong

I say build the fence make it electric and place sharp shooter towers every hundred yards along it.

How about we stop spending money on BOTH? Why should we have to eat illegal immigration and economic terrorism because we are fighting a stupid war that the people don't want? It is a real problem and has been for some time. What makes you think that people living in invaded cities and states have only recently noticed? Do you have any idea how much money we spend helping illegal invaders and giving them special priveleges? Do you know how much average citizens are suffering because of lost opportunities for work, education, and medical assistance, all of which are handed to illegals on a silver platter? Perhaps you are fortunate enough to not be affected, but please don't talk down to those of us who are.

Typical diversion tactic used by someone who cannot find a legitimate defense for their position.

The fact that this country is spending billions on a war has nothing to do with the issue of illegal immigration.

You also skew you numbers in an unrealistic way in an attempt to make your position seem valid.

Virtually nothing you said in your argument has any factual base and what little did make sense, seems purposely vague.

Where do you get your figures? Do you really expect someone to believe that your comparison of "pennies with BILLIONS" has any merit?

If you had any idea what you were talking about you would realize that the health care and education systems are directly damaged by this issues with others to follow.

If these two systems continue to erode you will see a domino effect that will eventually affect many other parts of this economy including unemployment, crime, and all public assistance programs.

I don't have the time or patience to explain it to you, and based on your question, you probably wouldn't understand it anyway.

The Nov 7th elections proved that Americans are fed up with the war,and fed up with the president, his policy's and most all of the incumbents.

The illegal alien issue is very important to Americans. Many of the border state are drowning in the tidal wave that has swept this country in the last few years.

I live in AZ and this so called "cheap labor" is costing us a fortune. It must be addressed and ASAP.Unless you live in one of the border states it may not affect you directly. But we are and have been on the front line of this battle for years. Its not new to us nor has it been neglected by us.

Its not just a little money to help a few sick people ,its the destruction of Hospital ER rooms that have gone bankrupt from not being paid for treating millions of illegals

You truly do not see the entire picture of the enormity of this problem.

    Illegal Immigration and Public Health

Because illegal immigrants, unlike those who are legally admitted for permanent residence, undergo no medical screening to assure that they are not bearing contagious diseases, the rapidly swelling population of illegal aliens in our country has also set off a resurgence of contagious diseases that had been totally or nearly eradicated by our public health system.

The Costs of Illegal Immigration to Californians: Executive Summary

Current Census Bureau data indicate that California's illegal immigrant population is costing the state's taxpayers more than $10 billion per year in 2004. This analysis looks specifically at the costs of education, medical care and incarceration, which are the major cost categories. Even without accounting for all of the other areas in which costs are being incurred by California's taxpayers, this study indicates that the burden is substantial — nearly $1,200 per native-headed household — and that the costs are rapidly increasing.

By draining public funds, lowering wages and working conditions, displacing legal workers, and overwhelming communities, illegal immigration causes substantial harm to American citizens and legal immigrants.

please read this Sophist.. i hope it might give you some information on money dealing with the illegal immigration issue. thanks for asking this question i enjoyed answering it..

Illegal aliens absolutely do not contribute more than they cost. Certainly the millions in prison and on welfare aren't contributing a dime to our economy, and the ones who are working often are paid in cash with no deductions for taxes at all. The ones who use fraudulent social security numbers and qualify to pay taxes and social security have so many deductions for dependents that they pay little if any taxes. We have seen them pay less than $100 in taxes and get back $4,000 refunds (thanks to earned income tax credits and multiple dependents). Some bargain, eh?

    6. The economy does NOT depend on illegal aliens. Sure, greedy CEOs (making $50 to $150 MILLION a year) and business owners depend on illegal aliens, but due to #3, #4 and #5 above, the only thing illegal aliens are contributing to is the collapse of our economy and making the rich richer.

    7. Without illegal aliens, the price of agricultural products and other goods and services will NOT soar. The definitive study on this subject is the University of Iowa's "How Much Is That Tomato?" The study concludes that 'since labor is such a small component of the end-price of agricultural products (which includes price to the growers, transportation costs, processing /storage costs, grocers' profit, etc.), using minimum wage workers instead of illegal aliens would increase prices of agricultural products by approximately 3 percent in the summer and 4 percent in the winter ... hardly the making of $10 heads of lettuce, $25 hamburgers, $1,000 per night Days Inn hotel rooms like the pro-illegal alien lobby claims.

heres a link for this information if you want to read more.. these were just a couple of many.

Spending a little tax money on helping sick people? If that was the only trouble with illegal immigration I just might agree with you ... but the whole question of illegal immigration is a wider one ... we don't know who enters the United States, we don't know why, we don't know anything about them ... to assume that all illegal immigrants are poor people only looking for a better life is naive in the extreme ...

Yes, the war in Iraq costs an obscene amount of money, but the war WILL be over at some stage ... will illegal immigration???

The reply is to vote out the entire incumbents. Every unmarried one in all them. The subsequent time, the brand new persons will feel two times earlier than making offers. Find out knowledge on corporations abusing their citizenship, all of them do not, and boycott the ones corporations. GE supported Obama and bought billions in go back. Don't purchase GE merchandise. Simple. If you uncover it's Goldman Sachs, then don't manage them. Bank of America, whoever, quit handling them. The well men will emerge while the corrupt corporations are outed.

Immigration got out of control after the Immigration Act of 1965. It's a very serious problem but most people don't realize it. One of the problems is that these people are not interested in being Americans. The immigrants before them wanted nothing more than to be American. Being American is not about citizenship, it's something in your heart.

Toffee fan thanks for the input. I am a die hard Conservative but can agree largely with you view. I do not agree that the war is wrong but I am not real happy with certain aspects of it either. As for health care and some of the other issues I believe that people need to take some responsibility for them self, it is not the job of our tax money to insure health care to people who will not work.
