Hi there...if you are connecting wirelessly there's a chance your permissions isn't set to "automatic" in your System Preferences>Network pane... click on the PPPoE tab then the PPPoE Options button. Check "Connect automatically when needed" and uncheck the other three under "Session Options"

...or your computer is trying to sign in under VPN.

To turn off the VPN select Airport icon in your menu bar and choose "Open Internet Connect" On the end of the top bar you'll see VPN, click this and then you'll see a box where you can deselect "Show VPN status in menu bar"

I see you also posted in the Apple Discussion Forum as well. Someone will also answer if the above suggestions do not work for you.

Whenever I put my PB to sleep and turn it back on, I get a popup telling me I need to sign in to change the Finder, my airport connection then turns on(after signing in). This started after updating to 10.4.8. I don't have a VPN thing on my menu bar. Maybe that's the reason you can't get online after waking up your iBook. Either you or somebody setup a VPN connection for your iBook.
