Does anybody here know how to READ??

Do people here KNOW that there are books written on pretty much ANY subject pertaining to dogs?

Books about breeding, genetics, dog behavior, obedience and agility training, health and emergency care, dog shows, EVEN dog names!

Pick up a BOOK and LEARN something BEFORE you decide to buy a Whateverdoodle or breed brother/sister/sire/dam!!!

Update:

I agree with not believing everything you read, but AT LEAST you will have some basis for your opinions instead of just taking a wild uneducated guess!

And no ST, I don't feel superior, I am just your average show person, what I DO feel is frustrated and exasperated.

As far as looking for educated opinions here, well, there is like 8 people here who are not totally clueless. The other gazillion are busy answering questions even if they obviously know nothing about the question.

Update 2:

azabbyg - I wasn't swearing, LOL! A dam is the mother of puppies. Spelled dam.

There are many people who post on here they are new to dogs that don't know that these resources exist. I always try to direct them to the fact that they do. If you have been dog showing for 30 years, you must know by now that people sometimes ask questions that seem obvious, but perhaps they are not to someone who isn't in the know. I've learned that in 7 years of dog showing, and I'm only 17. Its quite amazing what that AKC junior program helps us learn, besides how to stack. As dog people, we are obligated to do the best for our dogs, and promote healthy and responsible breeding and ownership. I know its frustrating, and I've had every bit as much anger, and been every bit as loud about it. In the end, the only thing that will help the dogs, is putting the knowledge out there in a fair, unbiased, and respectful way, and helping people find the information they need, even if some seem to need a whop over the head with a stick, because 99% of the time, they just didn't have the resources.

I have read numerous books, as a matter of fact I have an extensive library of books on dogs. You name it I have it, but I know that in every book there are different opinions and different approaches to different problems so I figure if I ask someone else that has years of experience I may get a new answer. It works this way all the time in the obedience sport and furthermore just because someone has written a book or has been training for years does not mean the method they are using is right it just means it works for that person. What works for one does not always work for another. Also depending upon which books you read they may all contain the same or very similar info. If the info does not work for the reader where or how should they get more info? (I know the internet, but going on this site proves the knowledgeable really do not want to help) I always thought that only the ignorant will not ask for information from others so that they can gain more knowledge and useful info, I never thought it made a person ignorant to seek answers from others who have more experience and knowledge.

I do agree that there are a lot of dumb questions asked here but not all who ask questions are ignorant . Sometimes people asking questions just want to ask so that maybe they can benefit or gain a helpful hint from all your years of experience.

What people write from different perspectives may help more than a book at times but at the same time I think it is best to check answers that seem like good ones to you with professionals for the sake of the animals. I think asking for dog name ideas is great. A pet shop I worked at once had a naming contest for a pet Scarlet Macaw. They have all these beautiful colors in their wings. The winning name was "Skittles" and I don't think they would have thought of this otherwise. Everyone loved the name.

Why are you here if you think it is so useless? lol

Yes, I AGREE WITH YOU ! people need to first know about the breed before they think about buying or adopting any animals, but the sad reality is that many don't and they are left with figuring out what to do next, And many times those dogs that are bought or adopted from someone that didn't know what they were doing ends up at the human or other shelter!

I think that's why this site is so great, people that have already experience with dogs can help others that don't!

Helping them get threw the hard part and helping them keep their animals and see that their is a light under the tunnel!!!

Source(s): I have read count less of training books, dog behavior books and I'm a intern dog trainer,a nd in a couple of years i will be doing it on my own!

DUH! Of course we know how to read! If we didn't how would we be able to ASK and ANSWER questions??? Yes there are books pertaining to anything and everything, but who just has books pertaining to every subject lying around the house?? Who wants to run to Hastings, Barnes and Noble, or any other bookstore every time they have a question or need information??? Yahoo Answers or any other website like it is CONVENIENT! I agree that people asking random people to name a dog they have never seen is a little ridiculous and I do get tired of answering and seeing the same questions over and over and there are many wrong answers given, but if the people asking the question wants to take the answerer's advice it is there choice and more than likely there mistake. I also agree that you should do your research before buying or breeding any kind of animal, whether you do your research on the Internet or a book. They are both helpful sources of information. So what does it matter if they use either one just as long as they get there question answered?

  • Don't be so smug. Yeah we all (well most of us) know how to read. Isn't one of the reasons to have this type of site to talk to others? It really does help others. Plus you cant tell me it doesn't make you feel just a bit superior. I've read some of your answers. For the most part you know more than the average pet owner. Perhaps you learned all of that from books. Who knows?

I so agree! When that movie 8 below came out, there were over 700 or some Sibes were put down because people thought the sibes on 8 below were just talented like any other sibe. They need training people! And there are WAY to many dogs in this world to make more! The sooner people relize that the better!

    Thanks For Posting!!!!

Do you ever get the feeling that many folks here don't even read the responses to the questions they ask?

How many people here even notice the "search for questions" bar at the top of the page. There's a place where folks might be able to get answers without repeating dumb questions.

I agree that people should research whatever they want to buy.... but if they want to go out and spend thousands of dollars on what is essentially a mutt, it is THEIR money and THEIR prerogative. I got my mutt for free off the side of a highway, I will never own a purebred again... mutts are awesome. But ya, people need to research what owning a dog entails before they go out and buy one. They are part of your family, not some accessory you prance around with.

Many people are too lazy to do their own research and would rather take the easy way out by asking random people who may or may not give good information. I try and help those people with vaild questions if I can, but I do get tired of answering the same thing over and over.
