I am a proud Marine Corps veteran. And I am against the draft. I do believe that people should do more to support their country and feel that today's young people don't take enough pride in being able to serve by any means, let alone through the military. My own opinion is that if you aren't willing to serve your country you have no right to complain about it. But not everyone has to feel that way; I respect everyone's opinions no matter where they stand on the subject.

The real problem lies in the selfishness and lack of pride in today's youth. Without seeing some sort of benefit, nobody is going to do anything for anybody else. Military service is unimaginable to most people because they get (almost) nothing in return for a relatively huge investment of their time and years of youth better spent in college or elsewhere. I understand and sympathize with the "citizens" who would refuse to take up activism, service, or anything else beneficial to the nation.

Military service takes a special kind of person. Only someone who truly loves their country would be willing to give his or her life to defend it. A certain (high) level of pride comes with being in the military. Nobody can ever look at a veteran and say they have never done anything important.

Yet some people simply aren't cut out for the military. Most of today's youth would never make it through one day of Basic Training, Boot Camp, or whatever other service specific training. Alot of people try and can't make it through, but I give them credit for making the attempt.

Instituting a draft would take away from that pride. We would have a multitude of people serving who didn't want to be and would most likely degrade the level of commitment it takes to serve. Our troop morale would be low causing our effectiveness in Iraq or any other combat zone to drop dramatically. In essence, while we may have a larger force, we would lose our strength. The strength that is young men and women who chose to serve.

Thank them. Support them. Remember that this is not their war; they are going out there and giving their all so that you can have your opinions and speak them freely. I stood up and took the oath; dedicated four years that I could have been in school and every day I am thankful for taking the opportunity.

I agree to some extent. I don't think that anyone should be sent that doesn't want to go but I don't think that they should enjoy all of the privileges that comes with being free either. That is why I respect the soldiers that are over there right now. None of them have to be there, but they have chosen to go and are protecting us. I think those that volunteer should get a higher pay than those that have to be drafted too. But what do I know? I'm just a silly old lady sitting at home on her computer.

The problem for this generation is that Canada has agreed to combo with USA and MX and as such will no longer be a safe haven as it was for us during Vietnam War. If the government only knew how many deserters are now in very responsible positions in all areas of the government, they would crap. Ha!

I think you'll find ,the ones doing the most whimpering about the draft, are also the ones with the biggest mouths flapping about the war in Iraq...Just goes to prove the old adage "TALK"S CHEAP"

This whole war means nothing me or to our people and some of our troops they don't even know why we are there even!!?? so why go to iraq if you don't agree with it in the first place? There where no weapons of mass destruction ever to be found, those weapons are in israel and right under our noses. The whole reason for 911 was because of our U.S. governmental support for israel and suppling them U.S. made "laser guided missle" weapons that still seem to be targeting and killing innocent woman and children of lebanon. If the draft was in effect i would have to go to jail because if i don't agree with this war then my heart and soul will not fight towards it's goal total freedom for the people im fighting for not $$$$$$ for a damn college degree.Troops fight better if it's in there hearts and this war is not in our troops hearts at all it's all about $$$$$$$

Thank you! They are only saying what they are because that crazed congressman from NYC wants to see more rich white kids go into the military. It's a crap publicity stunt, but you can't tell people that, they just want to wallow in their own drama.

Good point. Get out if you don't like it. And I hope that they draft all the illegals, or kick them out.
