Toddlers learn through exploring their environment. They use their senses to learn about the world around them. They are interested in sound, textures, smell, visual, and taste.

Toddlers like activities such as dancing, jumping, and climbing that they can move their bodies. Throwing, dropping, dumping, stacking are other activities that toddlers enjoy.

They enjoy toys and activities that they can investigate cause and effect. Water play is an example of cause and effect. Puzzles, books, and other manipulative's are good for cognitive development.

Children at this age begin to mimic adult behaviors such as talking on the phone and caring for baby dolls. They are developing their social-emotional skills by taking part in pretend play.

My daughter is 17 months old. She's getting slightly into the imaginary play. She loves to color and listen to music and dance. She's aslo inherited her father's engineering gene so blocks are a big hit. If you're going to be in charge of playtime or just want to get her a little something to play with while she's at your house I'd suggest those big crayons and lots of blank paper or a "my first baby" type of doll. If she visits frequently maybe her mommy could spring for a box of blocks that will live at your house. My daughter has a nice toddler safe baby doll that was around $10 at the local Target/Walmart/Kmart. Another tip....clear one room and make it completely baby proof if you can...or just one section of space if you can't dedicate a whole room so she can just run around in circles or play however she wants without you having a heart attack about her getting hurt or hurting your things. Its usually what I do when we visit relatives houses, for the sake of everyone's sanity. :) Hope this helps and you have a great christmas with your family!!

a good thing for that age is a treasure basket get a shoe box wrap it in pretty wrapping paper then fill it with bits of ribbon, a spoon or two pieces of fabric , pieces of paper, even a pebble, largew enough for her not to swallow and light enough that it wont break her foot if she drops it, also a few crayons the different textures sounds and colours will keep her busy, the pros of a treasure basket is its inexpensive, the activities are endless and you can always add more things /take things away without spoiling the fun, also everywhere she goes she will bring a dolly and also they wioll have a dolly for her so at least this is something different and it encourages her to think and use her imagination, as with anything else you will need to provide supervision

Children that age have a very short attention span and unlikely to play by themselves for long periods of time. Blocks, fridge magnets, your Tupperware cupboard and your pots and pans will keep them busy for hours. They don't pick up after themselves, love to sit on your lap and look and story books, cardboard books are the best.

They have the ability to make toys out of the darnedest things and store bought is not always it. Good luck

At that age, it's fun to play with pots and pans and wooden or plastic spoons. Stuff that can go in the mouth and then be washed, is unbreakable, etc. Little ones, some of them, like to make "music", read as lots of noise with stuff. Put the glass Christmas ornament up higher than she can reach. My daughter ate one at a friends house at that age! Maybe think more about safety in your hose. Babies play with everyone and everything. Have fun!

I would say.. baby dolls and accessries, Push pull toys, Electronic Learning, Chatter telephone, cassette player, Kitchen, medical kit, country play house .. .. would be great gifts for children in that age range..

    Good Luck

They love baby dolls, stollers, pretend play toys such as fake food and pots and pans. Starting at about 18 months they start to do alot of imagination play and like to pretend to be mommy.
