Why won't new DVDs play in my DVD player?

It doesn't even reconize there's a disc in it. Will a new DVD player play the old DVDs?

Update:

All I have are store bought DVDs

Sometimes, even store bought DVDs are NOT QUITE compatible with really old player, the technology has changed so much. I had a player that was a very early model( cost several hundred dollars when I bought it brand new in the 90s and it would not play my disc of "The Magnificent Seven" but a newer one the retailed under $80 plays it without a hitch.

However, there is also the problem of home recorded DVDs. I record my own on an HP media center and they do not always work. In fact, if I use the too often on my TV/DVD player upstair, it will finally reject them. However, that problem has not been noticed if I view the home-made discs on the media center using Window media programs like Windows Media Player, Intervideo , or even Real Player.
