My boss keeps stealing my work and claiming it as his.?

I am the sous chef, and the executive chef at my work keeps taking my ideas, putting a twist on it and then serving to the GM and Owner when i'm not there to gain recognition and praise. I wouldn't mind if he tweaked some of my recipes if he asked me.. instead he does this on my days off.. now 3 of MY recipes are in the menu as His specialties. Everytime I bring it up he gets defensive and angry and pulls executive status on me.. Help!

Why does everyone keep telling you to get another job?

You know Aaron, for someone to steal your ideas is a huge compliment. If you don't want to get another job as suggested, maybe you could try a different approach. Maybe you could return the "compliment" to the Executive Chef by letting him know that you like the twist he's put on your creation. I'm not suggesting you kiss butt, but I am saying that he may give you the credit you deserve if he feels you are on his side.

Since you have such great ideas, it wouldn't be wrong to consider yourself something of an artist. Artists have portfolios-examples of their work. You may want to consider creating a nice looking book with a few photos and recipes in it. If you do decide to look for a job elsewhere, you'll have more than a resume to show someone. Just a thought.

What you might want to try is setting up an appointment with the general manager and owner to show off some new recipes when your boss isn't around (and that he doesn't know about) so it's possible that you can get the recognition you deserve. This could also be a good time to tell them about you being the inspiration for your boss's creations-this must be done with tact though because they'll more than likely side with your boss if he's been there longer. Hope this helps.

I would get a meeting with the GM/ Owner when he is not around and tell them whats going on. If that doesn't work you need to get your resume' together and find a new position. If you do the meeting and get shot down what have you really lost? I say go for the meeting and tell them whats going on. Make sure that they understand that your concern is for the longevity and success of the restaurant. They will not be able to hire and keep good people if one bad apple is stealing everyones ideas....

Sounds tough. Isn't there a way you can time your presentation of new ideas when the GM & owner are around? From what I know about your business, incredible egos like that are common. Its up you to decide if you have anything to lose by taking him on and going over his head or if you need to preserve your references and keep the peace while you look for something better. G/L

Hello, unfortunately in this scenario, you at the end of the todom pole. The only thing you can do is get another job or stay with this job until something better comes along, then leave. This is unfortunate because you might like your job but the truth is when it comes down to the situation at hand your boss may not see a reason to stop this action especially if you are under him.

    You have 3 options

    1. Live with it, knowing you can come up with new recepies, do so, and get exposure to them before he can.

    2. Go over his head, address the oweners directly in private. This will likley cause quite a bit of tension between you and your boss, though could put you in a new light with the owners.

    3. Find a new Job. Or endure your current job, while quietly looking for another.

Why don't you give the recipes to his boss before you give them to him. That way when he presents them they will know who did it first.
