i heard some people dont like the saying merry christmas...they like happy holidays..why is that?

Our country is made up of a lot of different religious and ethnic groups. Some of these do not recognize Christmas, but do recognize the season. It is simply more politically correct to say Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings, especially if you don't know the person.

I happen to be a religious Christian, and I say Happy Holidays. The Christmas season in Christianity doesn't really start until December 25, and lasts for 12 days until Epiphany (the 12 days of Christmas). It is the secular world, like retailers, that started using Merry Christmas throughout December.

I dont really have a problem with happy holidays. most people use it because they want to incorporate new years in to their greeting too. happy holidays covers all the holidays celebrated during this time of year. its usually appropraite to use if you arent sure if the person celebrates christmas either. while I'm working I say happy holidays unless I can tell the person celebrates christmas (has cristmas stuff on their bill) I really dont think it matters what you say. its the thought behind what your saying that truely matters. Merry Christmas, happy holidays and seasons greeting to you this year.

Becuase if you divide up the word CHRIST-mas. Jesus Christ. People who don't like to celebrate Jesus Christs B-day get offended. They want people to say Happy Holidays instead. To enforce this they sue companys who say Merry Christmas! It's really not fair, if some people don't want to say Merry Christmas that's fine. But don't force every one else to say Happy Holidays. We are free to say Merry Christmas!

Because some people don't celebrate christmas.

I think "merry christmas" is as fine as the others. What I don't understand is why people get so offended at "happy holidays". That's f-ing crazy.

I donot associate X-mas with the birth or death of Christ. But I do enjoy the season and most things that come with it. The Christian origin of this holiday is all but lost. celebrate this holiday however you want!, dont worry about how others celebrate it , or what they call it!

When I am greeting someone in the holiday season, I say "Merry Christmas"

Happy Holidays wraps up Christmas, New Years Day and all of the other holidays celebrated by different relegions around the world. I like to say, Merry Christmas, but I usually say, Happy Holidays so that everyone is included.

Because not all people are Christian and Christmas is primarily a Christian Holiday.

While the holiday itself has pagan roots, it has become the major Christian Holy Day.

That and rather than it being something that gets said on the day known as Christmas, it gets up to six weeks of promo.

Why do people say Happy Holidays? Because the month of December has many Holy days in it, not just Christmas.

Well, saying Merry Christmas would imply that everyone celebrates Christmas. It's safer to say have a nice holiday since there are other holidays in December besides Christmas.

I hate to break the truth to you, but Christmas is an adapted heathen holiday from northern Europe. ( did you ever wonder what Jesus had to do with pine trees, he doesn't. He also doesn't have much to do with the fertility symbols of bunnies and eggs in the spring)

For a season to celebrate the gift of the child of God ( p.s. Shepard's don't hang out in the fields in December, it's too cold and there isn't much for the sheep to eat so.......not born on Christmas). I could hope that those of faith would have enough respect and faith in what they believe in and be willing to keep Christmas about the love and the acceptance we have been instructed to live with in our hearts and not let a group of secular politicians use your beliefs to become a tool that they can use to advance their own agenda. That, in my mind, is the true disrespect to Christmas.
