How can you tell if you are depressed or having a full on mental break down?

At what point do you consider checking yourself into a hospital? Symptoms include frequent crying, lack of interest in anything, fatigue, mood swings... how can you tell if this is just a 'phase' or a real mental break down?

You sound like you have symptoms of depression. If this has been going on for longer than two weeks see your doctor. Most people with major depression can be treated as outpatients with medication and/or psychotherapy. Generally people with depression are only hospitalized when there's a significant suicide risk, they have psychotic symptoms or if the depression is so overwhelmingly severe that they have difficulty caring for themselves. If you're having strong suicidal urges call 911 now or have someone take you to a hospital. Depression is a very treatable illness and there's no need to suffer needlessly.

Hi -- that sure does sound like a case of depression. The best thing for you to do right now is to ask a friend or family member to be with you in your house. Someone you don't mind crying in front of. Tell them how you feel and let them help you at least get to a point where you can decide whether to go to a doctor right now, or to make an appointment, or have them drive you where you need to go, etc ... If no one is available to you, please consider calling a hospital for some advice -- they will give you relevant numbers ...

well everyone has depression from time to time, and the crying, lack of interest, fatigue and mood swings all go along with depression....I have been ther and I thought i was losing my mind and that I would end up losing it,but you won,t ,its just a state of mind.I don,t know how long you have felt this way,or if you have had some tragity in your life to cause this but whatever the reason if you have felt this way at least for 2 - 3 weeks without let up then you are experiencing depression...Go to your doctor and tell him/her how you are feeling and get on some medication..My doctor put me on Paxil and I feel great now,we cannot always help our emotions and we need help sometimes ...good luck sweetie!

Well the first thing I would consider is how long have you been feeling this way? And do you know WHY or is it just for some vague, intangible reason you feel terrible? If there's a clear reason (like, somebody you know well just died or moved away, etc) then it is probably just a normal reaction to that event. But if it is persistant and doesn't go away, or there is not a clear reason for you to feel that way, then you should probably talk to your doctor about it, who can refer you to a therapist who can help.

If you go that route, the best thing you can do is be HONEST with the shrink... they can't help you if you lie to them about your feelings. I say this because I spent many years of my young adult life dealing with different shrinks and doctors and others like me in the same situation, and for some reason people start to build this invisible/emotional wall between themselves and the doctor who is just really trying to help, like they don't want the doctor to know what's really going on inside them, or they don't trust their judgement, don't think they understand, etc. Of course, if you think your doctor is a kook, then by all means find a better one. But mostly what they should do is talk to you about your feelings, give you some honest, helpful feedback (not just listen) and prescribe you some pills to help you feel better. If you go that route make sure you tell them everything you can about your lifestyle so they can give you pills that are right for you (there are many of them out there)

The worst thing you can do is not tell anyone, and not do anything about it. If you are truly depressed then it usually does not go away on its own without someone intervening into your problems. I hope this helps, and hope you feel better.

To be on the safe side, you can get checked by a doctor. It is all opinion, not fact. That is why they say get a 2nd opinion. So an MD told me that I have cancer. I said that I want a 2nd opinion. He said "OK, you are ugly also" :-D. Did that help.

Either way you need to be happier and more calm. This site can help you. Uplifting stories. Also see what the psychiatrist says about what your doctor may not tell you about depression. Remember "even in your darkest hour, I do not abandon you."

Definitely tell your doctor whats been going on if it lasts longer than a week. Maybe medication will work for you. If you have thoughts of suicide you need to immediately seek treatment.
