Basically, what is like going on with American speech? Know what I am saying?

Why are we throwing in worthless words just to fill space in our speech? Everywhere I go I hear people using words/phrases like "basically", "like", and "know what I'm saying?".

Does anyone else agree and do you know any other examples?

Well, like I think you know what you said is like totally true and wouldn't it be simply awesome if most of the American people would really like take their native language really seriously and all and try to totally speak it in the best possible way and everything.

Like I can't really and truly think of any particular examples or anything but, you know, if I really do, you'll like be the very first person to really know about it and all. Really.

Source(s): If I hear awesome one more time I think I'll hurl. Really.

It's part of the evolution of language. Language changes with each generation. It isn't only happening in American speech; it occurs everywhere.

Mr. Elliot my high school English teacher used to preach, "Verbiage for the sake of verbiage will get you an F in my class" He was a advocate of less is more.

i always used words like "so" and "well" and "kind-of" as kind-of a delay tactic. To give your brain a moment to collect what it's trying to say. i also use it to better explain an idea that conventional words just won't work for. Like kind-of.

its actually used in many languages. it allows the speaker to convey their ideas without the complete thought process. it may be annoying but so is "ummm....." or " i can't quite explain it but...."

its a crutch we all use from time to time but i agree that some may use it too often.

I agree with you. The way people use language these days is disgusting!

People use those "filler" words because they lack a proper vocabulary. Young people today use more slang and improper english it's embarassing.
