what is the meaning of the term "door prizes"?

I know that a door prize is something you get at a party or conference but where did the term come from and what does it mean?

    It means you may win a prize just for showing up. Usually a draw of some sort. Walking threw the door makes you qualify.

    Short for When you come in the door prizes. Everyone gets a ticket as they enter, no purchase necessary.
