What are the essentials I need to buy for a newborn baby (first time mommy)?
Hi, could any experienced parents please help me to decide what to buy in preparation for our new baby. I have looked at the 'what to expect in your first year' and its quite useful. However I would appreciate any advice on clothing, etc, anything you found essential or useful. Thanks!

Don't buy too much 0-3 months stuff. My daughter is only 6 weeks and is in 3-6 already so we had to give away alot of stuff.
Dont buy more than 1 pack of newborn diapers either...get lots of 1 and 2 sizes if your stocking up.
Get lots of onesies, socks, hats and sleepers. Lots of burp clothes, recieving blankets and pacifiers (if your going to use them). Deffinatly get a swing and bouncy and even a floor playmat.
Dont go for high priced clothes because they seriously outgrow them very quick. I have many outfits my kids only wore once (if that) that people paid alot of money for. Dont buy too much white...it will get ruined. Thats all I can think of for now.

May I suggest for a newborn 7-10 small onesies 7-10 burp cloths 7-10 small sleepers socks or booties 6-8 receiving blankets 2 heavier blankets 2 waterproof pads 1 to 3 outfits, these will not be worn very often My most prized possession was a boppy, if you are breast feeding you will probably want one. If you are bottle feeding, you may still like one! Check yard sales, eBay, ask for hand me downs, anything to save money, little ones do not wear out their clothes, and as long as you wash them right away, they don't get stained up. I wouldn't buy fancy bedding, just a few sheets, decorate the baby's room, but not his bed. His bed needs to be functional, even the bumper pads are a danger to the baby. I found this online, as well as the links below, hope they help. Cotton bodysuits, absorbent baby blankets, bibs, and baby booties are items that a new parent can never have enough of. Babies, God Bless them, are messy little things sometimes. For all the cuteness and adorability that they possess, they do dribble, slobber, vomit and overfill their diapers with some of their profuse outputs, and they are like that for about the first year or so of their lives. As such, their clothes do get messy quickly and often; so be prepared, and be practical. A mom may find herself changing her baby’s clothing almost as often as she changes her diaper – sometimes more. Here are some links to help.

The one thing that i didnt have when i had my daughter was newborn size clothes...she was only 6lbs 4oz so 0-3 floated on her. The things that i loved the most for clothing were then gown sleepers with the open bottom and elastic on it. Swaddling blankets. If you plan on pumping milk DO NOT get one of those manual ones, they are junk, you can produce more milking yourself...lol. The other thing i used a lot with my daughter were those little mittens they help keep hands warm at night and prevent them from scratching themselves. Don't go overboard on clothes ( i had many clothes she never even wore) I think like ten or twelve outfits for him/her for newborn and 0-3. They outgrow them so fast.
The other thing I found is you don't need to buy all namebrand things... a trash can with a lid works just as well as a diaper genie... things like that. Keep things simple. Its hard not to go over board.

I'm pregnant with #3. Everyone's answers about the bunting (draws shut loses at the bottom) is RIGHT ON. The needs of newborns are SIMPLE. Don't worry about toys, mats, etc. You can look for that stuff on garage sales later. My first two hated swings, but most mothers swear by them. (Got one in the basement if you're interested - brand new!!!) tee hee
One thing you might want to look for later on...is a johnny jump up (not the kind that hangs from the doorway). I know they sell them at Target. My baby started it at around 3 months old (when he could barely keep his head up) and has loved it ever since - better than his saucer. It strengthened his legs LIKE CRAZY bouncing in that thing all the time and it WEARS HIM OUT! He'll bounce in that thing for an hour or more.
I splurged with my new one and bought a really fuzzy diaper changer cover. I got it at BabiesRUs. Cost a little more but it is so much softer than the average cover.
Let's see...what else. I put a radio in the room and had it playing all the time until just recently. I could vacuum right up to his door and he wouldn't wake up....and if the dog started barking, he wouldn't wake up either. (Classial music is a good choice).
Need plenty of bottles and a bottle washer (just buy a regular brush in the kitchen section - the ones with foam fall apart and are a big fat waste of money - need one with stiff bristles).
Have fun with your newborn and give him/her LOTS of kisses.

One thing that I noticed is that that the outfits for the first month are way to big! I have three children all of them where full term and weighed between 9 14.5 lbs - 7 11 lbs. So if you want your newborn to have clothes that fit you should buy a couple premee clothes. Nobody has ever told me that but it would have been nice so there arms and legs dont always disappear..lol

Make sure that you have plenty of diapers in a variety of sizes. Stock up now because you never know how fast your little one will grow. Mine didn't wear the newborn size for more than a couple weeks.
Lots of baby wipes. You'll use them for EVERYTHING, wiping up spilled formula, cleaning hands, wiping off everything the baby gets dirty. Make sure you get some nonscented for sensitive skin because your baby may have sensitive skin.
Have on hand baby tylenol and baby motrim. When that first fever hits you want to be prepared.
Pedialyte. Our son was born at the end of August and on Christmas Eve after everything was closed he had his first stomache virus. We ended up at the ER buying pediatlyte for our little guy!
Baby nail clippers - they grow long and fast!
Disposable diaper bags or cheap zip lock bags to keep in the diaper bag. Always embarassing to have a poopy diaper in a strangers house or drs office to throw away. :)
Extra crib sheets. You will not feel like washing them every day when the baby is born and diapers do leak and babys do sit up - a lot. :)
Socks. Not too small either. Their feet grow fast too. And, they always are pulling one off! :)
Variety of bottles - you never know which kind will work best.
Bottle brush. So important to really get the bottles clean.
A bottle warmer is handy if you choose to warm bottles. I just started with room temperature bottles and he loved it. I could fix them on the go and it was a life saver - just bring along a bottle of water and instant bottle - no heating required.
Baby Swing.
Fleece Zip On outfits for the winter. The key is to dress in layers so the baby won't overheat when you are in and out.
Baby sunscreen. Needed all year!
Baby Bath, Diaper Rash Ointment, Variety of Pacifiers.
Hope this helps! Take Care! SD

I too am a first time mommy. You will need:
Lots of onesies (short & long sleeve), T-shirts, socks/booties.
I found that he grew WAY too fast to be spending too much $$$ on all the cutesy clothes. Now that he is 5 months, we wear the cool stuff now.
Diapers
Wipes
Pacifiers (optional)
Bottles - LOTS
Bottle brush cleaner
Baby lotion, soap
Vaseline
Burp cloths
Wash cloths
Receiving blankets - LOTS
Bedding for crib
Booger Sucker
Baby nail clippers
I'm sure I'm forgetting something....btu these were the essentials.

You will want a bulb aspirator (the booger sucker) my hospital gave me the one they used on both of my kids for free
also only get one package of newborn diapers, get size 1-2 after that
only need a few 0-3 months clothes, 3-6 months is what you will use the most, I used a lot of 6-9 month with my daughter
baby nail clippers
a lot of bottles
bottle brush
recv blankets
a lot of socks, get these big too, the dryer really does eat socks
onesies are wonderful
I hated the gowns myself
slepers are convenient
depending on the duedate and the weather in your area that time you will want to get things to make sure the baby is at a comfort temerature. Experts recommend one layer more then you but if the baby is sweating take a little off
pacifiers/binkys (if you are going to use them)
A lot of babywipes (I always used unscented to make sure that they didn't rash baby)
A diaper rash cream containing zinc-oxide, or vaseline after changes will help pervent diaper rash
laundry detegent just for the baby, I used All unsccented for my newborns, this keeps them from having so many reactions, anything that says it is additive free/scent free etc
If you are breastfeeding you must get boxes or nursing pads. There was a brand Lansinoh (see ini below) those were the best ever had, myister too
also if nursing a breast pump (do not pump out too much when milk is first coming in, it will hurt to be so full but your body is trying to determine how much it needs to feed the baby, also drinka lot of water while nursing)
Babywash, something safe and hypoallergenic (buy as much hypoallergenics produts as you can)
Most people recommend scratch mittens for their hands (a lot of babies will scratch their faces up with all their uncontolled movement)I always used a clean pair of their socks, same idea
a baby swing
a pillow for you if you are nursing, Boppy pillows are nice also known as infant support cushions
bibs
I loved a rocking chair for them, I had a gliding one, I would sit there with the baby while nursing or when baby was fusy and just sing ang glide for what seemed hours
If using a crib spare crib sheets, if using a bassinet spare sheets as well (prepare for lots of accidents and spitup)
a bather for the tub, something that fits into the tub so that they aren't in a full tub of water, for my brand newborns I loved the old kitchen sink way (don't forget baby soft washclothes in the baby aisle)
playpen/playards are convenient as well
I used a stroller a lot, helped me to calm the baby (use sunblock on them or cover them well) as well as loose my baby weight, some even come with the infant carrier (carseat)
breast cream
you just had a baby, you're going to need maxi pads
youwant some buton down shirts or something equally easy to nurse when it isn't convenient to you
nursing bra (normally safe buying one size bigger then your current bra you need oom for swollen milk filled breasts and nursing pads)
Tylenol
A good friend
Having a new baby gets expensive, make sure you or someone who is equally excited for youthrows you a baby shower, make a registry of what you would like at the stores and include the store name on the baby invites, if you know your babies gender include that too. I'm sorry this list is so long. I included a link to a checklist by wal mart as well as a link toshow you though nursing pads, they were definatly the best :D Congratulations on the baby
