Can anyone tell me someting about My Space?

My 15 year old niece is really into the My Space website. I have heard some not so good things about it. She assures me that it is safe. I am just afraid of perverts and child molesters going on there. Any reassuraces would help. Thanks.

Update:

That is what she is telling me that it is private and only her friends that are invited can get on her page. Her mother has access to her account at all times. That is the one condition my sister gave my niece before she would let her go on My Space. Thanks for all the informative answers.

If monitered it can be a fun way to interact with her friends. Any young adult should set their site to private allowing only the people she chooses to have access to the page. Her parents, and even you, should sign up and have her add you to her friends page so you can all see who she is friends with and make sure they are appropriate friends for a fifteen year old girl. Make her aware of these predators so she can be a little safer and smarter online.

I am on myspace and it's harmless for the most part. There are predators but there are also security controls. Being her age her profile should be set to private and the "add friends" request should be set to have a passcode. That way the person needs to know her last name or e-mail address to add her as a friend. Make sure she isn't misrepresenting her age or have a suggestive pic up there. Other than that, she should be safe. Any predator sees "15 year old girl" but tries to go to her site but it's blocked will probably move on to the next target. But there are scary things happening and that would be if your niece is posting inappropriate things or contacting people outside of people she personally knows. I would keep a close monitor on her but it's not myspace that is dangerous, it's all in how you use it.

well to say the least myspace s a very unsafe place for teens. i have a myspace myself and i am only 13. all of my friends have them. my site is blocked so the people i dont know have to ask to be my "friend" i only let people in that i know. most everyone i know has that too. its a block page so you either have to ask to look at the page or type in the persons last name. i dont think you should be worried because most kids are very safe and wouldnt give in to those types of people on there. i ope i helped you along some and happy new year!!

There is a setting that keeps profiles private. If she uses that, only the people she chooses can see her profile. Otherwise any creep can do an age search for 15 year old girls and find her.

As long as she has it set to private and where the only people who can add her are those who know her last name or email address, it should be safe. Also, she shouldn't go on there trying to find other people she doesn't know either. There are perverts and molesters on there, definitely, but she has to know how to be safe online. There are sites you can go to for tips on online safety.

    Hope that helps. :)

There are predators everywhere- not just Myspace. I would just suggest someone maybe watch out for her(like you get an account to see who all is on her friends' list). She should also make her site private so that only people on her friends list can see her site.

  • Myspace has teamed up with law enforcement to delete all of the profiles that are used by sex offenders. I hope this helps you feel better.

actually there are perverts and all sorts on myspace. anyone can email her. but if she's under 17, her profile will be set as private...or she can manually set it this was, as i have mine. this means you have to be on her friends list to see her profile, but you can still send messeges to her. so it depends on her really. who she allows on her friends list, and its up to her who she talks to and what she gets into on there, in order to keep herself safe.
