Does Bush's call for bi-partisanship in the new Congress seem at all hypocritical?
The Bush White House had the last 6 years to work on cooperation and bi-partisanship. Instead, those years were characterized by phrases like "I've got political capital, and I'm going to spend it." The Administration did everything it could to push through legislation that only appealed to Bush's Ultra-Conservative base. Like trying to eliminate taxes on the uber-rich. Or repealing the estate tax, so that billionaire's children could keep more of their parents' money. Or blocking funding for stem cell research, something that 73% of Americans feel should be funded.
Yet now that he's lost his legislative majority, the President has suddenly discovered the virtues of cooperation? Does anyone else think this sounds a little pathetic?

It's not if you use his definition of bi-partisanship. He uses this term to describe politicians from both parties giving him exactly what he wants. When he doesn't get his way, he pulls out the, "Why do you hate freedom?" response.

You have a different take on reality than I do. Now wouldn't that be special if we understood everyones legislative agendas the same way. There wouldn't be a need for cute little phrases like; conservative or liberal.... That would be interesting!
I try to follow most political proposals and I'm sure I wouldn't miss one that would eliminate taxes on the rich (uber-rich?). But, it must have had wings because I didn't hear about it. I did hear from opponents that Bush was trying to eliminate taxes for the rich but that was pure rhetoric, you know, when a candidate is on the stump they don't have to tell the truth. In other words: A campaign pledge is not a true mandate! Never has been, never will be.
On the subject of repealing the estate tax, that doesn't just apply to the rich by a long shot. There are plenty of citizens in the ordinary or low to middle class that have to pay big time taxes on inheritance. Would you rather that only the low and middle class be eligable for this benifit? Seems that eliminating a class of people from a tax break would be kind of, yea; conservative!
Stem cell should not be a government decision and liberals should get behind that thought. Anyway, only the risky side as understood by the moral majority are against any stem cell research.
The only thing sounding pathetic is you point. You obviously have some knowledge of politics and should know that what you are beating your drum about is change that turns with the tide. A republican here, a democrat there. It will work itself out in the end unless, some farther away than usual liberal or conservative thinks there should only be one party... Now wouldn't that be special and smack of elected dictators.

It isn't a little pathetic, it is completely pathetic. The administration just kike the majority members of Congress are scared to death that the Democrats will treat them the smae way they were treated over the past six years.
As a liberal I hope this is not the case. We had damned well better start working together. This divisiveness weakens us as a nation. It does nothing but serve our enemies. That is exactly what the administration and former majority in Congress has been doing for the past 6 years with their encouragement of divisiveness. It must stop now!!!!!!!!!!!

Your appropriate. Their plan is probably senseless opposition to each thing at a excessive time in historic previous as quickly as we elect action now. and of direction the typical they only make up crap. Like Saturday the homestead minoryt chief claimed that Obama became going to spend 1000's of hundreds of thousands of greenbacks on abortions. LMAO. Hes only going to establish assembly lines all over the earth i think. they might vote against honoring mothers. Wait, they did that final 3 hundred and sixty 5 days.

Yes. I think the Democratic Congressional majority should spend THEIR political capital on the average American people that they work for. THEN they will never run out of it. Down with Dictator Dumbya!!!

Yes, hypocritical, and no I don't remember him calling for bipartisanship before, but I do remember the insinuations that dems were terrorists, and the terrorists will win if you vote for dems. ANd I remember people in his admin. coparing Hilary to the nazis. So even if he DID call for bip[artisanship, the extended votes and refusals to let dems pearticipate in the final wording of any bills passed speaks louder than that. i will say this...if he vetoes everything that comes his way, he will be eating those words.

well, as you can see by the answers here, it will allow Dems to display that they are equally as ignorant as the Repubs they are replacing, but the questions seems to believe that there is some massive change in Congress. Its a bare majority, razor thin. If Dems want gridlock it just proves the points made by some Repubs. the incoming Dem legislators are not liberals, they are moderates who were better at being moderates than Repubs.

Yeah. He should just tell the 110 Congress don't bother. Anything coming up is automatically Vetoed

I can't even begin to list the ways that Bush is hypocritical and incompetent. Yes and very well said.

No more so than listening to attack-dog Nancy Pelosi babble on about "bridging the divide".
Last time I checked she'd spent her entire career seeing to it that there would be a divide, that the divide would be widened, and that the divide would NEVER be closed.
So, to turn it around, does it seem at all hypocritical to listen to Little Nancy spout that nonsense?
