Could I have diabetes?

My partner thinks I may have diabetes, recently I've been extremely thirsty to the point of drinking cups of water non-stop all day and then having to the visit the bathroom every half an hour, a right pain when you're at work! I also get extremely shaky and grumpy at certain times if I havent eaten for a couple of hours, one day last week we had to come home early from the shops as I was on the verge of collapsing and being sick, what the hell is wrong with me? I guess a trip to the doctor is on the cards

Update:

Thanks for all the advise, I've actually put on a little weight recently rather than lose it but all the other symptons are there, I'll make an appointment at the doctors first thing Monday

Sounds like it could be type 1 diabetes - if it is, it is very urgent you get treated (there are different types of diabetes - type 2 is most common and is a bit less urgent but with type 1 you develop it very quickly and quickly become very ill as you are describing) - I don't want to scare you but if it is type 1 diabetes you are in danger of going into a coma and/or doing permanant damage to organs - the best thing to do would be to call nhs 24/nhs direct or go into a+e right now - don't wait until Monday. I don't want to worry you - it might be something different, but it could be extremely serious so it's best to get it checked out right away. If you're reading this tonight, don't wait untill the morning - don't feel like you're making a fuss or wasting anyones time. In the mean time drink plenty of water - not juice - and try to sip it slowly - I know that's not easy! Good luck xx

Ok comming from a diabetic, it sounds like there is deffinately something going on with your blood sugars. You could either be diabetic or hypoglycemic (low blood sugar when you dont eat correctly). When you were on the verge of collasping have you had something to eat previously? If so was it high carb and sugar? If so then your blood sugars could of been through the roof if you are in deed diabetic. The extreme thirst is deffinately one of the first signs of diabetes along with frequent urination. A trip to the doctor is a MUST. Playing with diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney failure, comas, and death. Please do not delay in going into the doctor and make sure you tell him or her every thing that has been going on as recent as the past few months. Hoped I helped a little with this answer.

I'd go to the doctors to get checked out, they can do tests and will be able to tell you if you have diabetes or not. Also, Lloyds pharmacy do a free diabetes test, maybe worth popping in there and getting one done. Either way, make an appointment to see the doc.

You are exhibiting the classic symptoms of diabetes. Tell them when you call for an appointment that your symptoms are so pronounced because you need to see a doctor quickly. Uncontrolled diabetes in not only damaging to your organs but you could go into a coma.

You may have diabetes or hypoglycemia, which is the opposite of diabetes. Your shakiness & mood swings when you haven't eaten for a few hours, are the same symptoms that I have & I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia years ago. Your best bet is to see your family doctor. He'll no doubt order some bloodwork to be done. If he says you aren't a diabetic, then ask him to check you for hypoglycemia. It consists of you having to drink a bottle of some very sweet licquid & then having your blood checked every at hourly intervals. Good luck to you!!! :)

If you value your health then definitely a trip to the doctor and explain all that has been happening to you. The desperate need for liquid is one indication of diabetes. Cannot say the grumpy bit rings any bells for me for the shaky can happen. That you felt faint could be another symptom so pop along and get a check-up as apart from giving you an answer it will make you feel better knowing one way or another.

Yes it is, it does sound like you have diabetes. You have the same symtoms I have and I am diabetic. One thing though, have them do the fasting test. Mine didn't show up at first using just the blood test, but the fasting test always works if you are. Try eating snacks of carrots and other fresh green vegetables during the day. And if you haven't or can't, drink orange juice or have a piece of hard candy.

You said it! Sorry to say, you need to see your doctor right away.

You can buy urine glucose/ketone measuring dip sticks at the local pharmacy for cheap and without an Rx.

If you have glucose AND ketones in your urine, you probably have Type 1 diabetes (the severe non-preventable form), which is life-threatening if not treated ASAP.

If this happens, go to the ER for a Dx and fast treatment.

If you feel like you are going to pass out, breathing rapid and shallow, have a racing and strong heartbeat, or are vomiting, go to the ER ASAP! This is a medical emergency if you have diabetes.

You hit the nail precisely on the head; a trip to the doctor is most definitely what I would suggest at this point.

Certain factors including obesity, genetics, previous endocrine issues, lack of exercise, and overindulgence in certain sugars may raise your likelihood of developing Type-II "adult onset" diabetes, but otherwise healthy individuals can develop it as well.

Your symptoms do in fact have me concerned, but you have made the right choice to go ahead and get checked out.

    Best Wishes,

    -Dr. Finn
