Has anyone tried running a Vermont Castings woodstove without the catalyst?

The Defiant model uses an expensive catalyst, but is it totally necessary, or can I go a few months without it?

Update:

Sounds good so far. But what about gumming up the chimney if I don't use the catalyst? Don't want a chimney fire.

I had a ashley stove and I took it out and it worked fine. It's just a filter for smoke as far as i know.

Yes, you can run without it. It will burn a bit less efficiently, but no damage will be done to the stove. Nice stove, by the way!
