What would you do if you knew? Dangerous info?

A question a minute ago about folks mis-representing themselves here on Answers made me wonder:

What would you do if you knew someone was lying about their dog experience here in a BIG way? No, a HUGE way. If you knew this person claimed multiple AKC titles for a dog that were impossible?

There is someone here who is doing just that.

Does it bug you? Do you care?

I personally don't care if your dog is has a title, a pedigree or even a tail, you shouldn't have to lie about your dog to make it sound special.

It does irk me a bit to see someone boasting about phony achievements with their dog. It also bothers me to see someone using a string of fake credentials to support their canine advice.

So, does it bother anyone else? Would you contact the faker and let them know you know?

I think if it really bothers you and you feel you can do some good by contacting the "faker" then you should contact the person and let her know you know she is misrepresenting herself and her accomplishments. I read in one of your answers that you think she may be young and you would like to spare her being called out by some of the more aggressive members and that is a nice thing but she may become defensive and not care what you think and if this is the case once you let her know there is nothing else you can do.

I think some members claim they are vet techs, dog behaviorist, and dog trainers because they are in fact young or really believe they are giving good info and by claiming to be something they are not they think they will get paid attention to more then if they are average pet owners.

As to whether I would call the person out, most definitely but only because like you it bugs me when people claim to be something they are not and give info that is totally wrong. Do not get me wrong I do not think I am an expert (far from it) but if you do not know something you shouldn't answers and you certainly shouldn't pretend to be something you are not just to get people to listen to you.

No idea who you might be talking about, but I would be curious.

With that said, let me say it is the dog that earns the titles -- not the owner, so as long as the combination claimed is actually available to his/her breed, or any breed, I would not be in too big a hurry to call them a liar. You can buy dogs that are already fully champions or well on their way to becoming champions at time of purchase, so the dogs pedigree says little about the owner -- and there are a lot more great dogs than great dog owners.

Combinations of titles can be so impressive they are confusing. I bought a German Shepherd from a true artist of a breeder and got a five-generation pedigree when I got the dog. I still haven't been able to identify what all the different title designations are; but I do know several of them must be international because they don't come from around here (and they are real, as the breeders reputation and results attest). Still, the pedigree does contain just about everything that can be earned around here, too. There are a couple of dogs that earned just about all the titles that all of the other very impressive dogs earned together. My dog is only 8 months old and just finished an awkward stage in good enough shape to convince us he's worth showing.

We have squat and high hopes. Wish us luck. Titles or not, I already know I have a great dog -- and I did not need his pedigree to learn that. Ain't that what doggie luv is really all about?

    Enjoy and chill.

No it does not bother me that much. I always take my vets advice over anyothers here. For breeding questions I contact my breeder. I assume that 75% of the people that reply here are full of BS and want to feel important so if the advice make sence great, if I think it is a little off I will ask someone who I know (or feel) is qualified to speak on the subject. For the many that you know are in left field I just ignore!

**On a side note** People prefer to by AKC registered because they are going to get the Lab or Poodle or whatever. Not some BYB saying what it is. They dont always send in the papers or care about them that much, but want to make sure of what they are getting. Thats the thing with the AKC.

No I wouldn't bother addressing that person. If they have nothing better to do with their life besides making up stories about their dog then I feel sorry for them. I have to agree with you I could care less if a dog has a title or AKC or whatever. One of my dogs came with papers to register him for AKC but I never bothered because I got him to love and care for not show off. And my other dog is a mutt we found on the street who I also love dearly. I believe a true animal lover wouldn't have to worry about all that crap and would just love the animal for what they are. So again I say I wouldn't bother with that person but on the other hand if they are lying about credentials I'm sure they may not have all the facts when they give answers on this site so I wouldn't listen to too much of their advice.

I don't think you need to have show dogs with numerous titles to know dogs. There are a couple people here that have mutts, but know dogs.

I can think of someone in particular, who claims a whole list of titles, but her answers say otherwise. I wonder if she isn't really some teenager who stole a photo off the internet. I did email her after she was telling people I didn't know what I was talking about, to give her my credentials. She stopped excepting emails and I haven't seen her on here since. She'll likely be back though.

I can think of a supposed dog 'handler' as well.

I don't see the point of making yourself out to be something you are not, your answers will speak for themselves. I guess that goes for the real world as well.

You don't have to have a slew of titles to know what you are talking about. If you DO have titles, that doesn't automatically make you knowledgable (not directed at anyone here, I have respect for the few dog people on here).

Laura - almost every question asked gets bad advice, it is up to the questioner to find the good advice. If we stopped everyone who gave bad advice, WHO'D ask the QUESTIONS? LOL!!!

It would bother me, but I wouldn't contact the faker.

Maybe make a point to thumbs down everything they said that was untrue, and make sure I give an answer with CORRECT information if they every tell someone something untrue in the ways of training of taking care of their own dogs.

The fact that people even care that dogs are AKC registered bothers me, most less that they care so much they feel they have to LIE about it. My lab's parents were registered, and I was given papers to send off to have him registered, but I didn't even bother to send in his papers. It was the dog I loved, not the idea of "papers" on him

What bothers me is when people say they are a vet. Heck, they could be anybody. Maybe a high school dropout, etc. People listen to their advice because they claim to be a vet. That is what is really svary. I remember once there was someone claiming to be studying to be a vet, and when I checked their profiles, turns out they are a teenager. People should always check with their own vet aboce anybody here on Yahoo Answers.

yes it would bother me. it does bother me. i would anonymously go to AKC and rat them out. I've done that on a pit breeder who falsified papers. that was UKC, but still. do you know this person personally? if not, do what you have to do.

how do you know it's phony? can you back that up?

persoanally,, if someone get's on here as a fake, it wouldn't surprise me. unless they are a top answerer? then i would totally take them down. false claims? bet AKC or whatever club you may be talking about may want to know about it. tell me who it is and what they are claiming as a title winner. you can email me!!!

  • I think I would call them out on it. There is one person here who keeps changing her ID and advertises that she has a Cocker Spaniel puppy for sale. Every time that I see her, I report her to Yahoo, but yet I don't always see her and someone may end up trying to buy this "puppy". (I personally don't think it exists!)

Sometimes people lie about who they are and what they know to make themselves feel better about themselves!

Yes it bothers me. Just because the internet is anonymous does not give people a right to become liars, does it?

Contact them. Tell them you know. Out them for this. Dishonesty should not be tollerated in any arena.
