Rheem Upflow Gas Furnace... won't ignite?
First of all only qualified HVAC tech is who I want replys from... Sorry but I probably know more about heating & airconditioning than most people on here... I just have a problem diagnosing this specific furnace... I have a Rheem upflow furnace. Model# RGDE-10EQAGS I cant get the burners to ignite... The furnace goes through the motions, draft inducer starts, ignitor glows, and 24 volts is fed to the valve. You can hear the valve engage, but no gas will go through the valve... I figured that since you had the 24volts present at the valve then it was bad. I replaced it with a new one and still have the same problem. I even tried replacing the valve with yet another new valve, thinkin maybe there was a problem with the first new one that I installed... So this morning I called the power company to check to see if there was enough pressure coming to the furnace, and there is... If 24volts is going to the valve, and the pressure is right, why wouldn't it let in the gas...
I checked all the thermal switches and they are all good... The pressure switch is good to, cause if it was bad it wouldn't let the ignitor come on... One question is, does the ignitor play apart of how much voltage is supplied to the valve... Like I said before the valve gets 24 volts supplied to it, but just won't let the gas through....Thanks for your help

Electricity for the ignitor, and gas valve, areseparate systems... (primary and secondary). Couple of thoughts. First, back to the drawing board.. Is there gas into the valve itself? You said you called the gas company, but how far did they check. You have a small pressure tap in each side of the valve. If the outlet side has pressure when the valve is energized, then its not the valve. (probably). Be careful when you check this.. It is intended to have a hose/ gauge threaded in. Are the orifices on the burner manifold free from obstruction? Even one being blocked closest to the ignator could delay ignition long enough to lock out the board. If this doesn't help. post additional, I'll edit with help if I can.

the only thing I can think of is a faulty control board or a loose ground wire coming off of the burners I have a 24 volt transformer and I sometimes force the gas valve to open with it just for such a problem. have you tryed the pressure tap and checked the water col? I cant see that being the prob tho if you put a new gas valve .sometimes the cust will have 2 shut off valves between walls I saw this once at a laundry matt. fixitnow.com has an hvac forum go to it and ask or look in their archives

Well, I'm gonna try to help anyway. There is a button to push and the light will flash. How many times is the question. It should be one to 4 times. Then repeat itself. That will tell you what your problem is. Call a furnace company and tell them how many times it flashed and they will tell ya. That's what we did and it worked. The button should be somewhere where you try to start the thing.
