Yes, Zoloft can cause these side effects in some people. While the side effects will usually go away in 2-3 weeks, you still need to contact your doctor right away to let him/her know what you are experiencing. You should not abruptly stop the medication without talking to the doctor. There are many other choices out there in this drug category, it is just a matter of finding the right one. Don't give up and I hope you feel better soon! Call the doctor as soon as you can.

I started Sertaline at the end of January for anxiety. I started having loose stools at about day 7 and continue to have bouts of diarrhea 2-3 times a day. I ve put in a call to my doctor and am awaiting to hear from him. I will be disappointed if he can t help me with this, as the generic Zoloft is helping my anxiety, even though I ve been prescribed only 25 mg.

Some people taking Zoloft might have some side effects. The most common Zoloft side effects are dry mouth, insomnia, sexual side effects, diarrhea, nausea, and sleepiness. Not everyone gets side effects.

Every person is unique, so this drug may not be for you. Your doctor should be able to help you.

Talk to your doctor. A lot of times with drugs for problems that deal with your body chemistry, it takes time to find the best fit. I've known people that had to try 3 or 4 different antidepressants before they found one that worked without bad side effects. Everyone is different!
Your anxiety could be causing the diarrhea and nausea, too. Your doctor may be able to prescribe a temporary sedative (Xanax or Atavan) or a smooth muscle relaxant (Bentyl or Levsin) that will calm your stomach. But if you get a sedative, make sure you only take it for a short time, until you settle down a little. They are highly addictive.
Exercise has been medically proven to help with stress, anxiety, and depression--all caused by the same chemicals in different amounts. If you don't already have an exercise program, try to incorporate one, even if it's just taking walks with a friend. It will help.
Good luck. I hope you feel better soon!

rachel,
what the nurse said above is the best answer youve received here. YES zoloft and other SSRIs will cause stomach problems in the first couple of weeks...but will likely go away soon! hang in there ok? i take zoloft and have also taken other SSRIs and had "yukki tummy" the first couple weeks. email me if you want to talk. it sound like we have some things in common. i have OCD which is an anxiety disorder and have been through ALOT and may have some info for you if you have questions.
take good care :)

you could have ibs, not depression! zoloft is supposed to help by increasing serretonin in the brain, but in IBS the serretonin in the gut regulates the different type in the brain.
see a gastrointerologist, tell him whats going on and mention the correlation between zoloft to the bowel issue. you may just need zelnorm. he will probably see if you might have liver disease which can cause the ibs and pannic attacks and depression as well.
good luck

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net/
Ohhh..and Good Luck!
