Is $400 a fair price to pay for this AK-47 outfit?

And if not - what is?

Romanian AK-47. Folding stock, bi-pod, scope mounts and scope, 3 30 round mags, 1 10-round mag. Perhaps some other few misc. items I've forgotten.

My friends co-worker has it.

They do security work - all on the up and up.

If this guy says it's nice - I would tend to believe him. The price is pretty firm.

So, I wanted to get some opinions on the price to see if it's worth going to look at. Mainly looking for a winter-time toy/backup deer rifle - well, you know... I just want one.

I may keep it - may not. If I needed the money and sold it for $100 less this summer - it wouldn't break my heart.

I just found out about the scope. Heard it had scope mounts, but didn't know there was a scope included until yesterday, so I'm inquiring as to type, brand, & model, power, and objective lens size. Seeing if he'll throw in some ammo too.

I've been diddling around with this for a month - I think he wants an answer.

Thanks!

Update:

Yes, semi-auto - of course.

Update 2:

BACKUP deer rifle

I just thought I'd say that again - since that was apparently too complicated for some.

Who'd hunt deer with one?

Well, me for one - after my 8mm CZ Mauser went paws up the last week of deer season!

That is, of course, assuming it turned out to be more accurate than my other choice - my smooth bore shotgun with Foster-type KO slugs (3" group at 50 yards).

You ever tried to borrow a rifle during deer season?

Were would I use an AK?

On my 12.5 acres in the middle of nowhere - of course!

If you're smart enough to pick a good backstop and good enough to hit it (ie - you're holding it by the correct end) - you can get by with a lot less.

If it proves as inaccurate as some say - then one shouldn't need much at all - correct? :)

<sigh>

I now remember why I've answered 1142 questions - but only asked 15.

Any other comments?

Update 3:

The magazine limit in MO is 10 (+1 in chamber) & it comes with a 10-round magazine :)

For deer rifle, have a bolt-action 8mm CZ Mauser with a 3x Weaver scope sighted in at 180y to give me a PBR of 210y using a 6" vitals zone.

Mostly wooded or alternating crop with woods, most deer have been within around 100y.

Friend has used .45/70 for 95% of deer for 15 years which has a PBR=130y (although, could hold-over if needed).

7.62x39 has a PRB of 147y using a 3" vitals area, so I figure 4MOA should be OK to 125y anyway & good enough for BACKUP deer rifle & truck gun anyway. In MO loaded and unconcealed rifle OK. Only a concealable weapon can be concealed in vehicle. Yes - that is really true and regardless of CCW permit.

8mm & 7.62x39 have almost exactly the same trajectory with Remington ammo (170gr .vs 125gr).

Factory ammo way underloaded due to change circa 1905 from a .318 to .323 bore. Got 125 & 150gr bullets have to work up loads for, but should beat 30-06 & be close to 308.

If it's in good shape...finish is good and bore is crisp....it's a deal, GET IT!!!!

Even at wholesale price for the rifle plus the extras you are at well over $400.

I would recommend getting a bill of sale, names and address of buyer and seller, model and serial number, date and signatures. I do this as a normal course of buying and selling and it makes for good records. Handwritten is fine. Also, if the guy gets squirrely about giving you a bill of sale....... you know to walk away from the deal.

    Good luck and happy shooting!

(BTW....AKs and SKSs are used by hunters in lots of places for whitetail...they make great rainy day guns.)

For $400.00 you can buy a top quality AK 47. The Romys are not top quality and usually sell for between $200 and $300. If no scope is with it, no. See if he'll talk down some on price. The AK 47 is an extremely hardy and reliable rifle and accurate enough to do most jobs. It's not for long range shooting, but does what it was designed for quite well. It was produced (by default) by the most countries and no other rifle comes close to the number of them built, possibly approaching 25,000,000 or more AK-47s built since 1947, the year of it's adoption by the Soviet Union. The Yugoslavian model is the most improved and produced with superior materials on modern machinery. It's the 'top of the line'.

Avtomat Kalishnikova, model of 1947 aka AK-47.

The price is good. But I'd have little enough desire to hunt with one. Most states require that your deer rifle not hold more than 5 rounds when deer hunting. You'd have to find or modify a magazine to make it legal to hunt with in those states.

Also most AK type rifles have lackluster accuracy. If you get one that holds under 4" at 100 yards it's a real keeper. I much prefer a bolt action for hunting. But that is admittedly personal preference.

    Good luck

Don't forget, if you're in different states, you'll have to pay FFL fees too (~$50 to $100, depends on what your local FFL decides to charge). You might end up paying more than it's worth. Also, you didn't say what type of receiver (stamped, milled, ...). Romy AK's are pretty cool, but if I was gonna get a Romy, I'd build a 922r compliant one myself. EDIT: FFL fees would include the FFL in his state and the FFL in your state. It would be nice to know how much that is before you bid on this AK as you're entering into a contract when you place that bid.

Hunting deer with an AK-47? never heard of it... try a nice rifle(Remington) instead if you want to go hunting, and where would you use the AK? unless you have at least a few acres then theres no use of getting one. Other than that then, yeah $400 is pretty good. Have fun...i guess.

It's a good deal and after you buy it start looking for someone who will trade an M-14 semi for it. There has to be some liberal out there somewhere who prefers the Communist caliber regardless of the ballistics, and the American .308 stomps 7.62x39 Russian.

I would say that is a fair price considering new they go for $300-$400 without all the accessories. I paid $325 for my Romanian, even though it isn't the best AK clone available it still performs flawlessly and has fired several thousand rounds without any problems.

Key words......."well, you know....I just want one." That says it all more than anything else. I wish more people would post those words. If I did not want a gun or had no fun with them, I would have never handed over all that cash!

the bare gun is worth $400 in the semi auto version and much more in full auto but in full auto you better have all the paperwork, tax stamps, and transfers.
