how long is too long?
i came off the pill at the beggining of october last year, i was a couple of pills into a new pack and had previously been on it for 8 yrs! initially i went on the pill because of irregular periods but was advised the pill may help regulate them. since i stopped taking it i have only had two periods the first was 39 days after i stopped the pill (49 days since the first day of my last pill free week 'period'), the second period arrived after 49 days of my second cycle, i'm now on day 35 of the next cycle, and it looks like it will be a long one too. is a 7 week cycle something i should be concerned about if i am ttc or is it ok? at the moment the worst thing is i seem to get 3 weeks of pms rather than 2!
also, if i have a 49 day cycle, when would i expect ovulation?

I understand about the irregular periods and yes, they can conflict when TTC. You may not be ovulating every cycle. You need to get either the ovulation test kits and test 14 days after day one of your period, or try using a fertility monitor.
I use Clear Blue ovulation strips (I am also TTC and just came off the pill 2 months ago)
If it comes down to it, you might have to set an appt with your OB/GYN for a prepregnancy screening and see what she reccomends as far as fertility treatments.

HI. I had the same problem, except I never used contraceptives (pill, patch, shot). My periods are very irregular, I would even skip months at a time. I saw my doctor and she said the reason my cycle was so long was simply because I was taking longer than usual to ovulate which is clearly a problem when you want to get pregnant. No worries though, I am 11 weeks pregnant, (because of my irregular cycle, neither my doc nor I were able to determine accurately how far along I am. They determined it through ultrasound, not the first day of my last period). As for ovulation, I was not trying to get pregnant, it just happened. Not everyone does this though. I would recommend you stop looking at what day you think you ovulate because you are irregular thus your ovulations does not happen on the 14th day like other women. Try using a thermometer. Take your temp eveyday at the same time and record the temp. You will notice a slight rise, during this rise, you are ovulating. You can also try ovulation kits, but they are a bit costly.
The main thing to remeber, don't stress about getting pregnant!! You will not help yourself by doing this. Just relax, and nature will take it's course.
Good luck, I wish the best to you and your partner!

hi there i agree with the others about taking time for you to regulate after stopping the pill this can happen.
you mentioned you were on the pill to regulate you as they were irregular before being on the pill.
Have you been tested for pcos as this can cause irregular periods.
years ago they didn't really know about this condition so they put you on the pill and didn't do any other tests.
I would suggest you go and see your Dr especially if you have other symptoms like the following
excess hair in a male type pattern
obesity
difficulty losing weight
tiredness
acne
heavy and painfull periods
these are some of the symptons if you have any of these it would be worth getting it checked out.
it might just be the fact you been on the pill for a while and nothing to worry about so try not to worry
good luck and take care

Well i have been in your boat, i had irregular period when i stopped the pill. It toke me nearly two year to fall pregnant but you can go to your doctor and get them to do an blood test to check your ovulation as i only ovulated every three months and thats why it toke me so long to fall. Im sure they will do this test for you if you ask them to. I know how you feel not knowing when your next period is or if you are pregnant as i bought loads of tests. Just relax and have fun trying. The more you worry the more stressed you and your partner get.
Good luck and all the best

It can take quite a long time for your body to adjust to making it's own hormones - up to a year to regulate. Learn the basal body temperature (BBT) method to understand what your body is doing and when you might be fertile. A great book is "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". It would just be really good luck if you manage to conceive with your cycles so out of whack right now. Most women have a luteal phase (time between ovulation and menstruation) of 12 - 16 days so you should expect to ovulate sometime within that range. The problem is that since you aren't having reliable cycles, you need to be able to tell what your body is doing now. That's where doing BBT will be helpful. Good luck.

I think the best thing for you to do is buy an ovulation kit (supermarkets and chemists sell them) you pee on a stick like a pregnancy test but it tells you when you are ovulating and therefore most fertile.
My wifes doctor said it can take upto 18 months to get the pill out of your system.

Your body can take a year or so to get back to normal after being on the pill, especially having been on the pill for so long.

I think about 14 days before your period is ovulation time... well for me it is around there. Really hope your period starts to come regular, cause that's the same I'm hoping for for myself!
Well good Luck working it out!
