Has the Government lost it mind?
Today on CNN they said that on the border of Arizona, the Coast Guard is set up to watch for illegal aliens. But, if these people are armed, that they should not engage and let them come across. The Coast Guard should infact call the Border Patrol. What sense does this make? They could be drug smugglers, terrioist, etc. What are your thoughts. I hope someone else saw this today.
Can someone in the Coast Guard answer without getting into trouble.

Kayjay,
Actually I think the news reported that it was the National Guard and not the Coast Guard that were ordered not to engaged the armed illegals entering the USA along the Arizona border. And yes, they were required to use cell phones to contact the Boarder Patrol.
I mention it was the National Guard as the typical duties of the Coast Guard are sea bound.
And yes these people entering illegally could have been terrorists. And to top it off the rules of engagement state that our US troops can not fire unless fired upon.
Does it make sense? No it is an insane policy. Once again the politicians want to give the appearance that our borders are secure but lack the ba**s to enforce the our security.
Unbelievable!

I am US Army but may be able to answer this. Just like the Little Rock Ark. problem with civil rights and Katrina. The Constitution wanted to protect states rights. Each States Governor has a militia (the National Guard). So to protect the states from attack by the federal government it dis allows the Federal armies to be armed when sent to states. They must also be invited, hence the big issue with Katrina, Until the state invited the feds the feds could not go. I am unsure if the Border holds to these same rules or perhaps they do not want coast guard units embroiled as this may cause problems with Mexican treaties.
