How can we stop the Religious Right from destroying us?

The Republican party has been hijacked by the Religious Right, bent on establishing a Christian theocracy in America. The majority of our citizens oppose a war, yet most will do nothing to actively try to stop it. We spend more taxpayers money on other nations than our own(think of Hurricane Katrina, our response to the Philippines landslide, etc).

Also, in the aftermath of Katrina, we had armed Blackwater mercenaries on the streets of New Orleans with automatic guns. The disproportion of wealth in this country is astonishing (1% of population holds 90% of the nation's wealth).

I fear our fate is tied with that of the Ancient Roman Republic, though we may not officially become an Empire, we may become an authoritarian establishment should we endure great instability and hardship(terrorist attack, etc). The Religious Right worries me the most, they have unprecedented power in America. It is easy to write them off without taking history into account. What is to stop them from ruining us?

Update:

Looking at the answers I've gotten so far,it doesn't look like I'm far off. This isn't about Conservatism vs. Liberalism. This is about how religion is mixed with politics, and how those religious people have taken the Right. Pat Robertson has stated his intent on creating a "Christian Democracy." George W. Bush has poured millions of taxpayers dollars into "faith-based" initiatives. This isn't about abolishing/hating religion, this is about religion destroying our governing system. I DO VOTE, and to clarify to the ignorant fella that accused me of making something up, Blackwater is a security company that sends "contractors" into Iraq (mercenaries), and did have operatives on the ground in Katrina's aftermath (I'm from New Orleans), the owner of this company is a Right winged ex- Navy Seal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackwater_USA I don't like being accused of making things up, forgive me for being informed, unlike some people.

    1) People in the US have been too tolerant of the intolerance of the religious right. When they mouth off, they should be confronted--and that doesn't mean ( as they claim at the first hint of criticism) "limiting their religious freedom or right to speak" You--we--also have every right to disagree with them--and should stop allowing their cheap moral intimidation to silence us. For example--the throw around accusations that "all liberals want to kill babies." The proper answer t that is that if they believe a fetus is a human being--that 's their privilege-but its a religious conviction and they don't have the right to force others to abide by what is, at bottom, an opinion. the same approach goes for the rest of their patter.

    2) Vote Democrat. I'm far from being a hardline Democrat--but right now that is the only way to finish what was started Nov. 7--breaking the stranglehold on power the religious right has gotten in America.

    >When they start demanding that "their opinion" be given equal weight with empirical science (e.g. evolution, global climate change, etc.) they should be told to go get an education--and their "opinion carries no weight in matters tht are decided by empirical methods). This is especially important because they have indtimidated many school systems into incorporating elements of their ideology into school curriculumns-basically trying to indoctrinate OUR children into THEIR religion. And that must be stopped.

    >Quit allowing them to confuse their (political) ideology with real Christianity. No one can judge their "spiritual condition"--but their claim to even being Christian should be bluntly rejected unless and until they start acting like Christians.

If the "Religious Right" were, in fact, running this nation, then this nation would be nothing like it is now. Just take a moment to look at what is thrown at us day and night over the radio, television and printed media: porn galore, decadence, rampant sex crime, drugs at every turn, moral relativity to the max, homosexuality rammed down our throats...get the picture. This is part of the very reason those of the nation of Islam hate us. We are exporting this trash to their families, and they are ready to destroy us for is. Can you blame them? Instead of the religious right, many would venture to say the Leftists are the one's in power. Too bad it isn't the Right running this nation. The conservatives need to pull their heads out of their holes and turn this nation around. We are going to fall. If you question the fact that we are in a downward spiral, then you are already gone. Our fate is tied to the selfish acts and moral relativity.

Yes, the "Religious Right" is too powerful, that's why the 10 Commandments, prayer, "Under God", the Pledge of Allegiance, the Nativity, Christmas, and the Crucifix are so evil today and therefore banned, while immorality is considered to be more the norm. Social-liberalism is so much better than those ruinous, evil, righteous, Christian do-gooders. Long live the ACLU and Socialism!

I don't agree w/ your statement, but if you don't like how things are going, VOTE, if you didn't vote, stop complaining. The nation has the Left wing nuts (Democrats) in control, lets see if they can produce so they could shut the hell up. The democrats my friend is the people you should be afraid of.

If you don't like it vote. If you don't like any of the candidates, run yourself.

Oh, and one reason I voted for Bush in 2004 (I'm a registered democrat) is I kept getting insulted by the other guys.

    "ignorant fella."

    Vote for the opposition.

    Get your friends to vote.

    Get involved in politics.

Sitting around wringing your hands and wishing things were better is, to be blunt, useless.

"If you want anything done right, you have to do it yourself."

I totally disagree with you, but would suggest, if you can beat them, join them.
