Thnks for the question.
We the Indians are highly elastic genetically, implying that our shock absorber is highly adaptable to socio-economic changes. As an earth scientist, I do not wish to say that India was the only nucleus from where all other races or civilization spread across the globe, making us the oldest race of people. Life evolved on this unique planet more than some 1500 million years ago inspite of the planet coming into existence some 4,600 million years ago. I am talking of Life forms manifestations of our perceptions – mono cellular to poly cellular. Man is a very late entrant in this arena, he came just 2 million years ago. In between period life evolved in its most dramatic and prolific dimensions with extinctions and exterminations of which we know very little. Giant rulers like dinosaurs came and vanished much much before man and his co-genitors could come on this planet. What I am trying to highlight is that it is the survival of the fittest and that is through natural selection , I call it Darwin’s truth. It is valid even today on day to day basis on individual scale or community scales and even in the corporate world. The Indians are gifted to stand out as the fittest to survive. The adaptability to a situation calls for “vision” for the progeny and the Indians have it in plenty. This is the reason India is a land of multicultural old and new value systems existing side by side.
This “vision” is the cutting edge that each Indian possesses. This provides him ability of tolerance, assimilation, integration and an instinct to survive against all odds. The multiple invasions and plundering could not destroy this ethos, so unique to Indians, which can be seen frozen in time in our monuments and heritage. We are so heterogeneous in our socio-cultural behavior like beads of different colour but, forming a beautiful necklace. We as Indians have a high order of resilient capacity that makes us move forward and progress. Yes we have progressed a lot through the ages, hundreds of years BC to over 2000 years AD. Our rate of progress has been low in the contemporary world mainly for two reasons : (1) We as a nation are just 60 years old – we are just infant against some of the giant countries against whom we are pitched often for comparison. (2) Low literacy rate that suited the agenda of common politics. Literacy brings knowledge and light for vision. It is the “ Öjha” like mindset that has put the literacy programmes on low gear to create darkness around the common citizen so that he or she remains deprived of liberty to use his/her full potential and capability of reasoning. The same people shines on leaving the Indian shores in all spheres of skills and activities. Being Indian is not confined to the generation of post independence only, India is older than any definition of Indianness. It is this Indianness that created Mahatma Gandhi out of a practicing barrister, it is the same Indianness that gave us Mahatma Budh, emperor Ashoka, and Akbar. It is hard to believe we had Harshvardhana an emperor who use to ritually donate his all possessions at the bank of holy Ganga. We had Mahrishi Dadhichi who gave away his skeleton even for others use…… Can we say these are legends only, if yes, then may be the coming generation would consider the satyagraha of Mahatma Gandhi a piece of fiction one day. But, I am very optimistic, our heritage remains in our hearts and by natural processes it is passed down the line to the generations, our attire has changed and so has the permissiveness. The increase in permissiveness has enhanced our tolerance towards what was a taboo earlier. An Indian is not identified by what religion he or she practice or what language he or she speaks but, by his belongings to this land of diverse culture and heritage of which he or she is a bonafide owner and carries it forward progressively. I feel there is nothing hidden to be discovered about Indianness, as I said earlier, we as Indian are highly elastic and are amenable to change with time and space.

It Can Probably Not Be Something That We Have Inherited....Because Our Inheritance Consists Of Some Wrong Thoughts...Like Opposing The Birth Of A Girl Child And So On, Am Totally Not Against Our Indian Institution,Being An Indian I can Also Not Be. It Is Actually The Mindsets Of The People That Spoil Our Holy Institution. But The Actual Reasons, As To How The Indians Have Flourished To Such A Height Are Primarily: a) Our Tolerance Power; Yes, The Indians Today Living In The Prevailing Conditions Of Our Country Have Matured To Such A Height That Their Tolerance Power Can Surely Be Rated The Highest. b)The Second Reason Can ONLY Be The Little, But Yet Existing Goodness In The Hearts Of People. The Crime, Corruption, Poverty etc. Have Crushed So Many People, That Now There Are Only A Few Good People Left And That Also Only In A few Corners Of Our Countries, And THEY Are The Mean Support Due To Which Several Other Indians Are Inspired, Nourished And Led To A Successful Path In Their Lives. Yes, Our System Is Rated Corrupt At A Huge Scale, But In This Storm Of Corruption Did We Notice The Good And Efficient Workers, Still Serving Our Country? Some Of Us Didn't And Those Who Did Notice; Have SURELY Been Successful Indians, Because They Have A Patriotic Will In Their Hearts To Lead Our Very Own India To A Great Extent In This World....To Touch Up The Sky...Like No Other Country Did....

There is a famous proverb 'that no one is perfect' nad i believe the same holds true for a nation also. So what if there are obstacles like corruption, brain-drain, poverty, and population crisis prevelant in the society? It is the people who give a country its language, art, literature and music and if the people are skilled, educated, aware and healthy then a country is very much developed. There are many people who have made India prouud. L.N.Mittal, Sania Mirza, Aishwarya Rai are ther to name a few. In India the people are somewhat united as compared to other countries. During the much talked about Jessica Lal murder case all the people of india were against and made the high court change its decision and punish the culprit who was roaming frrely after commiting the crime 13-14 years ago. But the people raise voice and protested which made a big difference. It was a proof of unity. Even when the Human Resource and Development Minister made an announcement to reserve a high number of seat for backward sections of the society it stirred a hornet's nets throughout the country. People proteseted against it as it was completely unfair. In nutshell, the people of united and have shown that a generation has awaken and that generation won't let any injustice happen to anyone.. This is the reason why India flourish despite obstacles like corruption, brain-drain, poverty, and population crisis

Indian brain is considered as the most wise brain when compared to others. India would have been the Number-1 country in the world only IF the corruption is eradicated which is something highly impossible. Corruption digs almost every field of India. There are even more talented people amongst the general public who have no opportunity to shine. The strong bonding of the relationships which is still surviving in India gives an Indian the tolerence to flourish despite all obstacles. The practical way of living practised by an Indian gives him the courage to survive failures and get motivated towards success. Of-course this quality of the Indian is hidden as you have mentioned or I would say this quality has not been given the scope it deserves.

Everyone continues to be amazed at how Indians survive & flourish,
despite obstacles like corruption, brain-drain, poverty, inflation and
religious and lingual diversity,
The basic answer to this question is that INDIA is not just a country its a "Nation".
A Country is made up of mere piece of land which has no significance
without the people living in it, country talks of the Physical
existence.
Where as a Nation includes various kinds of people who live in that country.
The key to India's 'fast-track' progress lies in the discovery of this
hidden "Indian factor" within us!
The INDIAN factor, is basically the zeal to serve the Nation .
We INDIANS play a leading role in the national reconstruction shoulder
our responsibilities towards the nation. The great INDIAN factor is
developed on basic four dimensions.
Physical = Indians have the muscles of Iron and nerves of Steel
Intellectual = Indians have the ability that is highly desirable in a
competitive world.
Patriotic = Indian Patriotism has no place for
narrow and petty considerations. The interests of the nation is
supreme.
Spiritual = Indian spirituality distinguishes men from animals.
When these dimensions combine it prepares the great INDIAN factor that
is always ready to take up the challenges that lie ahead that's talked
as Obstacles like corruption, brain drain, poverty and population
crisis.
Indian factor has the POWER and ENERGY that is utilized for
the welfare and the defence of the country.

In India, 60% of the people ( population below poverty level) is struggling for survival. India is also a country where corruption is very high ( as per corruption perception index 2006). This is no wonder, since all the poor countries have a high corruption rate. But it can not be denied that India has flourished in certain areas of science & technology lik IT, nuecler research, space research etc. Coming to the obstacles, corruption probably has the most harmful impact on the society & the growth of the nation. Fortunately, in any society, only about 5% of the population is involved in rampant corruption whereas 5% is absolutely honest and 90% are in no man's land. They can shift to any direction from highly corrupt to absolute honesty depending on factors like situation, leadership, working environment, company etc. In india, people have a high regard for ethics & image in the society. Even the most corrupt persons do not advertise, in fact they preach honesty which they do not practice. The mass in India is generally honest. Similarly, brain-drain is limited to a very special sect, highly intelligent but a careerist, who are self orienteted and are not a part in the development of the nation. The poverty & inflation affects the 60% of the people below poverty level who are not benifited by the so called flourish & fast-tract progress. Religious & lingual diversity are more in the sub-concious minds of the people. The riots & violence are mostly created by a group with some ulterior motiv & general public niether participate nor support such activities. In fact, the country can really flourish if the 95% of the population vows to erradict corruption and the 40%, above poverty level vows to eliminate poverty.

Sir,
The only factor and unfortunately a dying factor is our rich culture. Culture includes tradition, beliefs and is basically a way of life. It does not depend on where we are or what we do or what religion we belong to. Where do you find in the world grandmas telling stories of the great Rama and Krishna, the ideals they lived by, their uncompromising character and non-negotiable convictions?
This land has been the land of the Buddha and Mahavira. Why would such holy saints choose to be born here? This is not an ordinary land whether one believes it or not. It is a rare opportunity indeed to be born on this holy land. Which country is perfect? The USA? may be close to economic perfection. What about values and ethics? People get married and divorced every other day. What will their children learn? Invasions can take away gold and silver not values, not the heart of a man, never.
This is the land of the Vedas, the greatest treasure houses of all knowledge. Some of it has naturally entered our systems may be unknowingly. To be an Indian is a responsibility because we inherit the great culture and it is our duty to protect it. By culture i donty mean the caste system or animal sacrifice or such evils that have come 100% due to misinterpretation of the Vedas. By culture i mean Concern for others, love for all life, compassion, tolerance.
Whatever we do we have these ideas deep rooted in us the difference is some dont realise and some do and some ignore it.
India is the land of spirituality, where the focus on the spirit was the foremost. By spirituality i dont mean religion. Spirituality is a state of mind, a way of life. This spirit is dying out. When we fight against the evil we are being spiritual, when we love for the sake of love we are spiritual.
In summary, all other progresses -the "fast track progresses"- will fall into place when the mind and the heart are with the country, for others and selfishness wiped out. Individual responsibility is to keep up our culture at any cost then the rest is only a matter of time. We can be mere spectators working for ourselves or begin a revolution and make our country perfect?
We choose now!!!

It is true that something is very unique about us and that is we all are "INDIANS".I want to put some light on the factors which make INDIANS flourish ,despite obstacles like corruptions, brain drain, poverty , etc are :-
1. Forgiveness : The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.
2. Learning Capacity : We don't mind criticism. If it's untrue, disregard it; if it's unfair, stay calm; if it's ignorant, smile; if it's justified, learn from it.
3. Knowledge Power : We know that knowledge is knowing the facts; and wisdom is knowing what to do with the facts you know.
4. Analysing Factor : We treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and we help them to become what they are capable of being.
5. Hardwork : The hours u work are not as important as what u put into those hours.
6. Appreciate : Appreciation is like tea or coffe. It refreshes, inspires and spursu into action.
7. Courtesy : It cost nothing, yet it buys things that are priceless.
8.Teamwork : It is like a salt. The food may be edible without it, but when added, it makes it tasty and enjoyable.
9. Happiness : Happiness is not a station u arrive at, but a manner of travelling. It's not where u r, but what u r that determines ur happiness.
10. Mindset : We know that the past cannot be changed, but the future is still in our power.
11. Success : Real success is having courage to meet failure without being defeated. We take time to stop, rest and relax,is not a time wasted - it will keep us going even longer and with more inspiration
At last i would like to say that we know how to make every day a Diwali or Christmas day for someone, by giving them those most - desired gifts of appreciation and recognition. Real success is having courage to meet failure without being defeated.
