What really worthwhile stuff did I miss not having a TV these last 20 years?

That depends upon what you did with the time you might have spent watching TV.

Before you rush out and purchase a bunch of DVD's, you might want to visit a media rental center and local library to see what is available. There have been numerous show that are worth the effort of watching, but still few that you might want to own and watch over and over again.

Shopping search engine listings, once you know the names of some series will give you listings for both new and used DVD's, singly and in sets. You might also try topics followed by "DVD".

Overstocked sites and eBay have several listings all the time.

You might also consider donating any sets that you no longer are involved in heavily watching to your library.

My family hardly watches even though we have cable - there is just nothing on worth watching. My husband was really into the History Channel, but he says they have not produced anything new in years and just do rerun after rerun.

Sorry, that doesn't help, does it! There are just so many more things to do with your life when you still have kids at home. I do seem to remember a few years ago that there were some GOOD shows on animal network that had the most AMAZING footage that I just could not believe, but as to specific suggestions - no, I don't have any.

The Civil War series produced by Ken Burns for PBS was phenomenal and really set the stage for the success of the History Channel and Discovery.

try amizon.com and look at their dvd collections. and they have user ratings as well so you can see if other people enjoyed them as well

You didn't "miss" anything in real sense....buy/lend DVDs of the above-mentioned staffs.

I would say get Time Warner Cable, and watch every single movie on HBO demand, CINEMAX demand, SHOWTIME Demand and TMC on demand. Oh and don't forgot to watch GLADIATOR.
