is it ok to use cheaper petrol engine oil for a diesel car?

i read that it was ok to use diesel engine oil in a petrol car because diesel oit is better quality and has better cleaning agents and stuff in it, but what are these elements?, is it possible to get them seperately/cheaper?, could i get away with using petrol engine oil..?

i ask as my wife's car needs oil, and i figure it has to be cheaper to get a large container for both cars rather than two small ones, one for each...

stingy maybe, but as i have to borrow the money to get the oil in the first place i'd like to get the best deal i can..

    hi

    PLEASE READ

only one chap has answered correctly, and that is DO NOT use

diesel oil has a lot of anti foaming and cleaning agents in it, this can result in a total loss of compression in your engine, if you wish you can use a good quality diesel oil for up tp 500 miles NO MORE just to clean out your engine then go back to a good synthetic, its a old trade trick to use diesel oil to keep a car quieter,

its simply not worth doing, change your oil more often and your engine will last years

at the end of the day any oil is better than no oil, however in the long run it is not a good idea to put petrol oil in a diesel, especially in large quantities, a top up should be fine though. Diesel oil has more chemicals in it to stop gunk building up in the engine. Petrol cars do not need this as much as there is much less soot in the combustion process.

Bearing loads are much higher in CI engines due to the high compression ratio required to ignite the fuel.

For the small amounts of money/trouble you are trying to save, is it worth worrying about? You may get away with it if it is a normally aspirated diesel, but if it is turbocharged, the oil has to cope with dissipating some very high temperatures and the petrol engine oil may not provide the levels of protection that the correct oil would.

If you must use petrol engine oil, suggest you change it more frequently as it will have a shorter life.

This can be done, but the manufactures recommend an oil for diesels that have more detergents to help to keep the engine clean and also to neutralize acids. There's the chance that after an extended use of regular oil that oil lines could become restricted.

    petrol engine oil?

All engine oil is the same, except that the extra duplicant content and the catalyst in it.

My advice is get a better one. It is not the price that matter. It is the quality. Find it out.

It is better to maintain the engine in good condition and save up the repair cost rather than saving money on engine oil and end up have to go for major repair.

Otherwise, get 2 bottle of cheaper one and with a bottle of catalyst. You know how to do mathematics right?

I am a chief engineer. Do not use oil for a diesel engine in a petrol engine. They have different properties (Viscosity, TBN detergency, TAN). and besides that any warranty would be void.

My guy says that 30W is good for diesals and he has a few in his life. He heard of the 'new' oil but he says regular oil works just fine. Save your money and get the large size!

Sorry if you have any sense and want to run the car for long do not use petrol; type oil

No. One is lighter for petrol engines. The other is heavier for diesel engines. You will do damage.

if you are asking about in place of gas- heavens no.

if you are asking as a lubricant it would be okay but you should definitely change the oil about 2x as often thus negating any savings. If you ACTUALLY change your oils at 3k always and use the highest quality regular oils you should be okay
