Treat a Diabetic Child?

Sorry but I'd say give them a sugary drink, but only if they are awake and able to swallow it - the sugar will quickly make them better if they are hypo, and if they are hyper it won't make that much difference as long as they are treated with insulin when they get to hospital (I'm assuming they're ill enough to need to go to hospital!). BTW they would be v unlikely to die from a hypo as your liver releases glucose into your blood if your blood sugar's too low, but they would feel rubbish and are at risk of fits etc. You never know what your examiner might think is the right answer though - I've even heard drs comming out with crazy things about diabetes because it's a complicated condition and they don't understand it! I am diabetic but I don't know how you can ask people to only answer if they are sure when you have not even asked a doctor whether the child is Hyper or Hypo Glycemic. Your question cannot be genuine because

1. you would not trust something like this to Yahoo

2. if you were told you needed insulin you would have to get it from a doctor

Anyway, if they are type 1 they will be hypoglycemic. In that case a sugary drink will give them a 'bank aid' quick fix but insulin will re-establish their ability to produce their own blood sigar.

Do nothing is not an option for anyone in any type of coma

Recovery position? What would be a recovery position for someone either in a coma from lack of blood sugar or with a raging thirst from too much blood sugar?

If you really do have a diabetic child go to see a doctor, get blood tests and a proper diagnosis and treatment. Not from someone you don't even know on Yahoo.

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. I'm hoping this is a homework question or something - if you actually have a diabetic child and are struggling with this question then you need to get yourself informed.

The correct answer is E) check the child's blood sugar to see if they are hypo or hyperglycemic. If that is not an option and the child is definitely showing symptoms of aberrant blood glucose, the best course of action is to give sugar. Acute higher-than-normal blood sugar is far better tolerated than lower-than-normal blood sugar. You want to err on the side of high and not low; give sugar, not insulin.

The correct answer is A. If you are not sure whether someone is hypoglycaemic or hyperglycaemic, you err on the side of caution. Unless treated urgently, hypoglycaemia can lead to death. Hyperglycaemia is not so serious in that death isn't usually imminent. Once taken to hospital, it is easy to connect someone to an insulin infusion, thereby returning their blood sugar levels to normal. If, on the other hand, immediate action wasn't taken to restore a hypoglycaemic child's blood glucose level to normal, there would be serious consequences.

If anyone who is diabetic is in a bad situation and you are unsure if it is a hyper or a hypo, you should give them sugar. This is because it is better to give a hyper a bit more sugar (with little effect) than a hypo none (with greater effect). And if it doesn't resolve, call an ambulance!

i am a diabetic and you need to have your child's doctor prescribe a glucose monitor for you if you do not already have it. You should also get into diabetes education classes or at least if they are not available in your area or country do some research on line and learn some more on your own.

If you are unsure of what to do in any emergency situation you should contact your DOCTOR or go to a hospital for help. Your child could die if you treat them incorrectly.
