What is the sound I am hearing? Has anyone heard of anything like this?

I've been curious about what this sound is since I was a child. I am not quite sure what I am hearing (but I am guessing EFI), but I hear a type of sound when a TV is, and yes, it can be on mute or just displaying a blank screen (more so with the old school CRT tvs, most plasmas, and some LCD TVs), the same with computer monitors (mainly CRT but some LCDs), and even some other electronics.

What is the sound I am hearing? Keep in mind all the devices have to be on for me to hear it.

The funny thing I am actually unable to use certain air fresheners, because they emit the same sound expect in such a high pitch it drives me crazy, it almost feels like it will make my ears bleed when i use these oddball air fresheners (that require AC power)

the sound you hear is normally from the flyback transformer in the television to drive the picture tube.

"There are several parts inside the TV that can potentially make this noise. These include the horizontal flyback transformer, deflection yoke, other transformers, even ferrite beads in the horizontal deflection circuits. In addition, transformers or chokes in the switching power supply if this is distinct from the horizontal deflection circuitry. Or even a portion of the sheetmetal used for shielding if in close proximity to a magnetic component. "

The frequency you hear is about 15KHz and above. Many women can can hear in that range, but usually not men.

You may have a high frequency range response. I'm also sensitive to high frequency sound, but not lower frequencies.

In addition to the fly-back transformer, you can also hear a "buzz" when a graphic is on screen because the video signal "bleeds" into an out of tune sound circuit. Likewise, if the video circuit on a monitor is out of tune, or failing, you'll hear a buzz.

Don't know about air fresheners. Don't have one.

The walls in your room reflect and mix the noise. If you move your head around, you should notice a difference in intensity from position to position. This is due to constructive and destructive interference.

Think about it this way. When you drop a stone in a body of water it creates a wave pattern. Now, drop another stone and watch the waves interfer with each other.

When crest meets crest, they create a larger wave. When crest meets trough, they cancel.

I just thought that everybody heard the hum of the electricity in the cathode ray tube (CRT). But I grew up in the 50s when the sound was much louder in tubes manufactured then. I remember that there were other types of tubes for radios & TVs and I used to play with them in the tester at the store to hear the different hums. My mom would say, "doesn't that one have a nice sound? Try this one, and what about that one?"

The sound is a lot quieter, but it is still there. It may be that you also hear higher frequencys than most people.

high freqency sound eminated from all kinds of electrical things, even some lights. it will drive you nuts if you let it. get rid of the gas filled bulbs and any electrical things you dont need on, turn them off. if the sound is on that will mask a lot of the freqency squeel so dont sit there with them on but not making the sound they are meant to.
