Why do people ask essay questions from Philosophy class?
If you haven't studied, read or learned anything in class why do people think they can find the kinds of answers an instructor is looking for in here?

Let's look at this in the most positive possible light.
Some people do not learn well by reading essays in a book or hearing lectures in a classroom. Some learn best by hearing things discussed, seeing many different points of view, and deciding which portions they find agreeable and reasonable and which they do not. And there are certainly some who have an idea what they want to say but have trouble framing it properly or fleshing out their points as much as they'd like.
So it's quite possible some of the people obviously asking questions from class are just pursuing their own means of education and understanding on their own. I find this not only not despicable, but quite laudable. If everyone knew how they learned best and actively took a role in their own education, I have little doubt that this world would be a better place.
Of course, possible isn't necessarily actual. I'm sure some ARE just lazy! In which case, answering them well is the worst punishment I can imagine. They will have lost the opportunity to learn something and will have intentionally made themselves less than they might be.
So I say go ahead and answer. The consequences seem to flow naturally and in a just manner. Peace.

Rather than 'instructor', I would suggest 'tutor'. Still:
a. Laziness. Why look-up anything when one can ask some idiot (like myself) for the answer to: "the meaning of life, the universe, and everything".
b. 42. (Before you ask.)
c. Kant can't.
d. Most 20th century philosophers were/are mathematicians.
e. Which says a lot about the state of contemporary thought.
f. So, what's happening in YOUR neighbourhood?
g. Solved any equations lately? Felt depressed?
h. Wittgenstein (I refuse to apologise for the spelling or his destructive beliefs) seemed a lost soul.
Well, he was... suicide seems to be how one copes with a lack of belief in anything per se... or, one just goes out and kills something.
Distress, thy name is doubt...

I concur, they are lazy.
And why do they expect to find acceptable answers here? Well, due to their laziness, I imagine their critical reasoning skills aren't the best either. :)
