Be consistent then. Why should a rich man like Al, be able to buy off his own personal irresponsibliity while someone who hasnt raked in the dollars telling everyone else to do as I say and not as I do, might not be able to afford to buy someones carbon credits.

I don't defend Gore the man, I defend the chance of offsetting pollution by using credits. It's like mitigation of land. If you destroy (say) wetlands while building a mall, you can "make up for it" by creating wetlands somewhere else. The government allows that all the time.
