A question for atheists, where is your source of morality?

Does it come from science books? Perhaps it comes from "Origin of Species"? Or do you make it up as you go along?

What's your take on this issue?

Update:

Where is the fundamental source? Some stated it is determined by society. OK, how did society develop right and wrong? Etc.

This question gets asked almost as much as Paschal's Wager. I am a very moral person. My morality is based on common sense, personal responsibility and the desire to get along in society. I think about the consequences of my actions and let that be my guide.

If you did not have religion in your life do you think you would be a rapist or a murderer? Is religion all you have to keep you from being a horrible person?

Human morality can certainly be understood from an evolutionary perspective. Humans are not unlike many other social species in our capacity for love, altruism, charity, honesty, etc.

But as an individual I like to feel responsible for my own moral choices, rather than just obey what someone or something else tells me to do, especially for reasons of reward and/or punishment. For me, to live according to impeccable standards of honesty, charity and courage is to enjoy a beautiful life.

morality ie. do unto others is hardly more than common sense

    what is the mystery ?

humans have imagined all sorts of gods, demons and hobgoblins

the principal church ( catholic ) has an appalling history of violence, repression and hipocracy

have you never heard of galileo, torquemada or how the church never spoke out against nazism ?

did you know the last time the catholic church castrated choir boys ( the castrati ) to maintain their " angelic" voices for the papal choir was 1938 ? catholics ought be really proud of that and how their priests are the ones who most commonly molest young boys.

no specie evolved from celebacy or do they use some twisted

translation of human's better natures to retain their sick power ?

So far I've managed to live a pretty moral life without ever having to consult a book that condones slavery, sex with children, violence againt people who disagree with me or brutality against women. I suppose that means I make it up as I go along. I'm just glad I'm better at morality than the bible.

I'm not an Aethiest, but I'm not a Christian either. I know that I don't need a outdated scripture to based my morality. For the most part, I use common sense and what else can I say, I like to surround myself with positivity not negativity.

First, the golden rule. Next, common sense, Next, our standard of decency , Next, our personality, Next, our sense of honesty.

If a person is a model of honesty simply because he's afraid of the wrath of his God - - - he is not an honest person at heart.

If a person depends on what he learns in church to guide him through his life, he'd better not learn from those priests who are bankrupting the churches as a result of their lack of morals.

my source of morality comes from how i was raised and what society deems as acceptable. if your christian and you were raised as part of an abusive family you may be abusive yourself because thats what youve known your entire life. i was raised as part of a loving family that frowns killing, beating, swearing. so that is where my morals come from. morals dont just come from religion or a belief in god.

We evolved with an innate sense of morality.

You can see the same sense in Any animal community...

One does not need a book to tell one how to be good...

    At least I don't

    It comes naturally...

The fundemental source of my morality is that if I screw something up, it's going to be up to me to fix it. That makes the stakes pretty high, and makes it important not to do anything that can't be fixed.

Society determines whats right and wrong, not religion.
