Sometimes out of boredom. But occasionally I get a chance to be helpful.

Boredom? Maybe it's too cold to go outside and someone else is hogging the TV and you're out of books to read? Don't feel like doing your research project since you still have weeks and weeks before your article is due and they pay crappy anyways?
There are myriad reasons. At least for me there are.

Complete boredom because in many places its cold so people stay inside and there are much more things to do on the internet than to watch T.V.

Because we are programmed to answer questions, it's in our nature we must solve mysteries and find solutions. It goes right back to our cave-men ancestors who solved the problem of no heat etc. So as long as people ask we will answer.

I think it might be that we will find others that are wondering the same thing. Or what kind of questions other people can come up with. Don't you just ever wonder why?

And we don't have lives, maybe? :) I think that sums it up.

Because they are here to answer.
I don't answer a lot of them, just once in a while.
