Looking for good eats in Austin, TX.?

I'm gonna be living in Austin, TX in a month - moving from The Bronx, NY - and I'm wondering what some good restaurants are in terms of service, price, and tasty delights. I know there's a chinatown there and I'm definitely gonna miss the NY chinatown's food. So, anybody have any input on the cheap but tasty?

There is a Chinatown in Austin, it's off of Far West. This might be different from what you're talking about, it's an actual restaurant called Chinatown. I've never been there but have heard that it's pretty good.

My favorite restaurants in Austin are Waterloo for breakfast, they have the best biscuits! Actually, it's good all around. Berry Hill for the best margs and tacos, plus the view is to die for! Jaime's Spanish Village, across from Stubbs is a really good cheap mexican restaurant with decent margs and killer queso. For BBQ, Saltlick is the best ever but I don't think that it's exactly cheap, nor is it easy to get to but as a once in a while deal, it's definitely worth it. Hut's has awesome hamburgers, and Homeslice is the best pizza! Oh, and Gene's New Orleans Restaurant on East 11th is a little hole in the wall that has the BEST roast beef poboys, they're SOOOO good! They also have good daily specials, too! www.genesneworleansrestaurant.com

    Hope that helps a little!

Austin has a huge number of great restaurants to choose from. Chinese and Italian are probably the two that are the most lacking though in terms of authenticity (especially for a NewYorker!). The best Chinese and Asian restaurants (not the hip, trendy ones, but the down home tasty ones) are South and Northeast. There is not really a Chinatown per se, but there is a great Oriental market and some restaurants on N. Lamar Blvd. They call it "Chinatown" but it's owned by a Vietnamese family. We have some pretty decent Thai and Vietnamese restaurants. Try Sea Dragon on Research Blvd (also known as 183).

I agree with the other person, the best food here is either TexMex or BBQ. County Line for BBQ is great, as is Salt Lick, and Rudy's (which is cheaper than the others). Chuy's and Trudy's are good (both are chains) try Juan in a Million for a non-chain. Hula Hut is also...unique :D Hawaiian texmex on the water?

If you are looking for a great place to watch the sunset (over Lake Travis, with a really nice view) go to the Oasis, but the food is just okay.

Great Thai food = Thai Tera on 6th street.

Very Austiny restaurants = Kerby Lane (Guadalupe or Kerby Ln. Locations), Magnolia Cafe, Austin Java

There's no Chinatown, but Houston is only 2 1/2 hours away and there is a good sized Chinatown there. Warning about PF Changs~ it is a chain, albeit a good one!

    Happy eating :D

Wasn't aware of a Chinatown in Austin. You'll make up for the loss with Mexican food. Try Guerro's on S. Congress or Chuy's. BBQ - Salt lick, County Line and Rudy's. Sandwiches - Thundercloud's, Kitchen Door. Best place for happy hour (along w/ Texmex food) - Trudy's. Best Vietnamese - Kim Phoung, Triumph Cafe

  • Yes, there is a Chinatown in Austin! It is fairly new. I doubt it will compare to NY, but maybe it will help with your transition!

Madam Mams on the drag (Guadalupe across the street from UT campus) is really yummy Thai food.

Starseeds is on the northbound frontage road of I35 around the Dean Keaton exit... they have all kinds of food and the people are mean, but you like it - good art on the walls, definitely a different atmosphere.

Gosh, gimme an area - North, South, Downtown, University... whereya at?
