Why does everyone think they're persecuted?

I really want to know. Many members of all belief or non belief systems (theists, atheists, agnostics, spiritualists, EVERYONE) seem to think that they are especially persecuted. What is your reasoning, if you are among these?

For me, it's the bumper stickers I keep seeing that read, "We hate DictatorMama. Throw rocks at her and tell her she's a bad cook".

I'm an atheist. I know there's plenty of people out there that don't agree with me, and more than a few who will say rather unflattering things about atheists, and sometimes about me, personally. Do I feel especially persecuted? Nope - it happens to everyone else, too. It's mildly irksome, but I just run around spreading non-denominational peace. That'll teach 'em!

I'm Buddhist, so I don't ever feel persecuted. I think that some people feel that way when they feel their beliefs have been threatened. Most people want to feel that they are right. If a person is secure enough in their belief, they won't feel persecuted.

  • Good question. I'm a Christian and I love my belief. People sometimes say that Christians are persecuted. They are around the world, I know that. But, I have never been persectuted to an extent that I felt horrible. Yeah, I might be looked at funny, but I can take it. You know?

I am a FreeThinker/Agnostic/Humanist and no non religious person can hold any office in congress and we are frowned upon in America. We are constantly looked down upon as immoral and dishonest people. When that isn't the case at all. We are considered to be second or even third class citizens in this country. Hell some of us were born in this country but are looked at as guests in this country. Which I find to be utterly disgusting and absurd if I must say so myself.

  • Most people fall into a category of persecution of one form or another. As a white male I know all about that

The only ones who are suffering real persecution are those who are losing their lives for their faith, not killing themselves, but being killed. We live such sheltered lives here in the U.S., we think if someone looks crosseyed at us or hurts our feelings a little bit, that it is persecution. We have not begun to know what real persecution is.

It probably is ingrained in our genetic code right down from Adam and Eve being persecuted by the clever seductive powers of the serpent in the garden asking questions and making us doubt the love of God.

I am Catholic-spiritualist but you hear so much about atheists and such putting Catholics down because of their belief in a higher power and other Christians putting them down because of the religious ceremonies and accusations towards priests. I don't think Catholicism is especially persecuted, but I do see Jehovah's Witnesses persecute just about everyone as do right-wing Christians. Personally, it shouldn't matter what someone believes in, but everybody points the finger at someone. It's just human nature.

I do not think of myself as persecuted (I'm an atheist Buddhist/Vedantin), but many think they are persecuted because they are, and others think they are persecuted because otherwise they would simply be wrong.

I feel persecuted when some one implies that I cannot think for myself and that I am stupid for believing the way I do. It brings me to tears. I don;t tell anyone how to believe.
