Rabies? Soap? Just Thirsty? What's the foam around my doggy's mouth?

I let my dog outside to go poddy (fenced in backyard). I thought I'd leave him out for a while to enjoy the nice day, since it's usually cold and rainy. Well, I put out a milk bone treat on the patio, then went back inside. He came up on the patio and ate it.

While he was eating, his mouth was foaming. A lot.

So I thought he might just be thirsty (since he drinks a lot). Well, I put out a bowl of water. He won't drink.

So, now I'm worried. I don't know why his mouth is so foamy. Could he have eated something outside? I don't have any soap out there that I know of... maybe he tried to drink the pool water?

I hope it's not rabies. It shouldn't be... I think he's already had his rabies shot.

Should I take him to the vet as in to the vet emergency hopital today... or can I take him on Monday when I can get an appointment for his normal vet? Or should I not be worried. Is this normal?

Currently, my baby is laying down on the patio. I don't see any foam now.

Opinions?

Update:

Oh... and my baby is a blue tick hound/black lab mix. And he's under a year old.

Update 2:

However, my husband is worried about his food being contaminated. Just hit the news a few minutes ago...

Update 3:

Correction: I guess the recall has been out since the 16th, but we just saw it on the news a few minutes ago.

Oh, and my doggie has his rabies shots.

Don't panic! It's just your dogs saliva mixing with the bone. It's perfectly normal and it will probably happen again the next time he eats a bone. Give him some water to wash the bone down.

My goldens have bone junk & foam on their mouths after eating a bone all the time!

it could in basic terms be unfold by saliva. exterior of the host animal rabies virus dies straight away, besides the actuality that deadly it incredibly is a exceptionally fragile virus. quite a number of issues would reason foamy mouth. Poison, seizures, exhilaration. Max foams while he's excited. while i became gowing up my dogs Jake made the errors of attempting to p.c.. up a toad, the effect became some strange faces and a foamy mouth. After that day you ought to constantly tell while a toad became close to, he'd commence foaming. while it doubt the vet is only a telephone call away. If its attainable your dogs had a seizure or has gotten into poison, get him to a vet correct away.

My doggy gets foam around his mouth when it is really hot and he plays a lot. I would put some Ice cubes in his water or get him to chase the hose, or whatever you can do to get him to drink because he may be dehydrated. I would get a vet appt just in case though. Make sure you keep track of your rabies vaccinations from now on. It is illegal to have an un-vaccinated dog.

Do you have toads where you live? If a dog bites a toad his mouth will foam. They have a mild poison in their skin. It won't kill him.

The others have also mentioned (rightly) that he may get foamy in the mouth due to just eating certain stuff like a dry bone.

Watch his behavior and if he begins to vomit or develops diarrhea you should call the vet tomorrow and see what s/he recommends.

If he had rabies he would have other symptoms, too. (See below). If your dog has been vaccinated for rabies the chance is very slim to none that he has rabies.

Basically I suspect it's nothing to worry about.

I doubt he has rabies. Rabies takes about 2 weeks to incubate. He was probablly just playing hard. If it will make you feel better call your vet on Monday.

P.S. DA KID don't know ****. They don't give them in the stomache anymore. I had about 20 shots around the site of the wound, one on each butt cheeck, and one in each arm. This only applies to the first trip to the hospital. They give you what is needed for your body weight, I was about 190 lbs. at the time. After that I only got 1 shot in the arm.

Source(s): Had the Rabies treatment myself about 3 years ago. NO FUN AT ALL. About 3 weeks of going to the hospital for shots.

Likely he was running and playing and when he ate the cookie he got foamy. Dogs get foamy in the mouth for many reasons naturally without having rabies.

Probably just from being active and playing outside! Totally normal.

he probably just ate something that made him sick. i think eating grass sometimes can do that to a dog. if theres no more foam and he starts feeling somewhat better, you could probably just wait and take him monday, but if you think he needs it, id get him help right away

  • Run! You're gonna have to get some extremely painful rabies shots in the stomach!
