Is there a right and wrong way to hold a cane?
I'm borrowing a cane to use for walking while I recuperate from a badly sprained ankle. I'm gripping the curved handle of the cane so that the tip of the handle exits at the back of my hand. Is that correct, or should it be the other way around? Does it matter?

I've been using and building canes since a near fatal auto accident in 94. Based on info I received when in rehab I fit my canes like this; stand with your shoulders straight and your feet spread apart shoulder width. With your hand gripping the handle firmly in which ever position you prefer, there should be a 15 degree bend in your elbow. I've made quite a few cane handles out of unusually shaped objects like antler, billiard balls, door knobs and even cow knee caps. These shapes are more comfortable for some arthritic hands. For someone like yourself who wont be using it the rest of your life, a perfectly fitted cane won't matter as much. RScott
