Mitutoyo is not the most premier caliper maker, as opposed to Starret, Brown and Sharp and others, they are just a popular, pretty accurate, brand of measuring instruments. To replace the dial, on any type of analog instrument like this, you would need a watch hand puller and a good set of precision screwdrivers. These can be bought, but, only at a premiem price. I know it hurts to throw away any kind of tool, but if this set of calipers, has a broken dial, they can be replaced for under 30 bucks. The cost of the tools that it would take to repair this type of instrument would far exceed the cost to replace it. I suggest you go to a company called ENCO, they are on the web. You can buy a set of calipers for under 20 bucks. If your husband is bound and determined to repair this set, please dial me up, and I will try to find him an outlet for all the tools he will need.

This type of repair needs to be done by someone who has the proper tools and the precision blocks to recertify the calibration once the repair is done. An expensive job and probably not worth it. A new Mitutoyo Digital Caliper is not all that expensive, will measure in both inch and metric at the press of a button and has no dial to get unreadable over the years. I have one that's fifteen years old and still perfect.

buy a new one! the pointer is pressed on the shaft a watchmaker has the correct puller for these small parts. the precision tool can be damaged by someone not familiar with its inner workings.
