If a woman eats alot when pregnant, does that mean the baby will be bigger?

I've heard some websites say that it does, but a book said that it did not make a difference (unless a woman is already diabetic, I guess that can mean a bigger baby). Anyone know the facts, or know of a reliable source that says for sure? I was just curious....

Update:

Just so everyone knows, I'm not eating a ton! Gaining normal amount of weight and taking care of myself ;)

No, not necessarily. In general, the baby is going to take what it needs, also things it doesn't need, from the mom. So, mom should eat healthy and live healthy.

Ok, that said, eating too much can cause......

extra weight gain, which will be more to get rid of later.

can cause gestational diabetes, baaad news for the both of u

being heavy can make labor more difficult and dangerous.

just a to note a few

DO NOT DIET while you are pregnant, but DO follow a healthy meal plan.

Remember, eating a lot of fruits and veggies is way different than eating a lot of pizza and ice cream.

The eating for two is not eating for two. A normal daily intake is around 2500 calories. A pregnant woman only needs about 300-500 calories more than that daily intake. Eating plays a role on you and your health. And your health is important for the babies. I know you have heard the phrase "eating for two", but that does not mean you have to gorge yourself (which as you mention you do not do), but sometimes woman are concerned with not eating enough so may eat too much or concerned with gaining too much so eat too little. It might help you to keep a track on your daily calorie intake to see if you are getting enough. I wrote it down and though I was eating healthy realized by keeping track, I needed to eat more for pregnancy needs. You said you eat healthy and I am guessing your not pecking at your food. It might help you to eat more smaller meals if you find yourself not eating enough. In a diabetic woman, yes there is usually a bigger baby, but a bigger baby does not always mean a diabetic baby or unhealthy, but it does not mean a healthy baby nor does your weight always mean a bigger baby. It does effect your baby, but the baby gets its nutrients from the placenta and your body so you need more nutrients for you. The foods you eat can seep into the amniotic fluid and your child get a taste of those foods. I would talk to your doctor and ask any concerns you may have but eating alot does not mean your baby will necessarily be bigger.

Diabetes definitely causes big babies. Some people have diabetes before they get pregnant, but there is also "Gestational Diabetes," which some people get only while they are pregnant.

Make sure you're going to all of your prenatal visits - they will test you for gestational diabetes about halfway through your pregnancy.

I think your risk for gestational diabetes goes up if you eat tons and tons. So I wouldn't eat anything and everything! Normal weight gain in pregnancy is 20-30 pounds.

    Good luck!

Eating a lot during pregnancy only makes your thighs bigger. Yes, a woman who is already diabetic or develops gestational diabetes runs the risk of having a larger baby (macrosomia).

Try the book Planning Your Pregnancy and Birth. It's from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

if a woman eats a lot while pregnant, she will be fat, fat after giving birth rather then just fat, so instead of taking 6 months to get back into shape it will take over a yea, you are not eating for 2, you need to eat 5 mini meals a day healthy ones, and healthy snacks in between drinking a lot of water,

yes and no because at the last tri-mester is when the baby starts picking up weight actually like in the last month so eat normally but a little healthier and everything will turn out fine!

The more calories you are taking in (eatting) the more calories and nutrients go to the baby. The same rule applies with negative things like smoking or alcohol consumption when pregnant. Eat as much as you need to, but remember whatever you do, it is like the baby doing the exact same things...remember to live healthy!

I think it just depends on the woman. I did read a Swedish study a few years ago that suggested women that ate more in their pregnancy were programming their offspring to live in abundance, thereby programming them to be thinner. Women that ate less programmed their offspring to have a frugal metabolism thereby holding onto weight.

  • no because when iwas pregnant with my first child i ate like a crazy woman usually around my second trimester when the nausea and vomiting were gone and i had a 8 pound and 5 ounces healthy baby boy!

no unfortunatly not it will only make you bigger though it is true your body shares the same vitamins and nutrients the ol saying "eating for 2" is actually horrible advice is it just more you will be stuck with after baby comes
