What does an opthamologist mean when she says that my daughter's eye measured at +3.00?
The other day I took my 4 yr old to the opthamologist because of her left eye turning in towards her nose. After a thorough test we were told she is really farsighted in her left eye only and she is straining to see and that is causing her eye to turn in...so here is my question-- the dr said she "measured at a 3 but she wanted to start my daughter out with +2.00 instead because of the thickness"? What does that really mean in laymans terms? In my shock & disbelief I left the office and then began wondering...why would she put her in a 'script that is less than what she may really need? I know, I know...I should have called the Dr (and I still will once the office opens *on Monday*!), but thought I'd post here to see what anyone thought or knew about this instead of causing more anxiety over the weekend :) ...Thanks for your kind input- I'm still a little flabbergasted that my littlest one will be wearing glasses in just a few days! :|
Thanks David!- that helps explain it - the dr did say she could only have to wear the glasses for a couple of years, that the glasses will help correct the prob- or she *grows out of it*

most use a rating of 1 to 5 my son has a similar problem his Dr uses the scale rating of 15. the script is lower than the rating cause of her age she has a chance for her eyes to adjust and correct themselves over time. my sons Dr explained his far sight as a 4 he gets tired more quickly than others but doesn't need the glasses at this time only if he gets real tired when reading. he said think of it as money you have 15 dollars and the one eye is using 4 so he still has 11 in the bank do you take out a loan. no just give it a little time since her one eye is over correcting the use of glasses is good for her cause it will help the good eye relax and not be over worked. hope that helps. but i wouldn't worry to much at this stage of the game she is young and all things my correct themselves over time. Good Luck and God Bless you both. DONT USE THAT LINK ITS A SEX SIGHT

Relax ........ ur doc is right
ur daughter hs some probs in her left eye
she is able to see far away objects clearly and not near by
as the image which our eye sees forms on retina which in ur daughters case forms behind retina in left eye
so to compensate the confusion bw both eye left eye moves so that the image forms on any spot on retina
he ws right she would require glasses but it is optional after she grows up n uses contacts or can even go fr laser

the +3.00 is the "diopter" needed to make her eye focus as normal. It is a measurement of focal power of the lens. He is trying a lower diopter to see if she will grow out of it, and make the focal muscles "compensate" and become stronger...
