What is the all time DEFENSIVE team?

Your hypothetical team is playing for "all the marbles". The good news is you are leading by a Goal, there is only one minute left to play. The bad news is your opponent has pulled the Goalie and has put these 6 players on the ice to try to tie it:

Wayne Gretzky

Bobby Hull

Guy Lafleur

Mike Bossy

Mario Lemieux

Paul Coffey

The good news is you can put ANY 5 players that ever played of your own out. Who is at LW-C-RW-RD-LD

Notes:

* If you REALLY think one of the 6 players your opponent has is the right person to put out, you can "clone" him, but be prepared to justify it.

* For "extra credit" you can tell us who you have in Goal.

* If you are putting a player outside his normal position (for instance you have 2 centers), justify that ("he can play the off wing", or "in case my center gets kicked out of the faceoff circle"), something like that.

Try to explain your choices a bit, not just give 5 names

Update:

You can put ANY five players out from ANY era you want. They DO NOT have to be from the same team!

Update 2:

Please do me and others who are taking time to do this a favor

READ the question

C'Mon, people, I am asking for the ALL TIME defensive player at EACH position and you can choose from ANY era.

Is this question Really Rocket Science??????

Thank you!!!!!!!

Guy Carbonneau-an all time great defensive player

    Bob Gainey-same reason

    Sergei Federov-great two way

    Craig Ludwig-best shot blocker ever

Bobby Orr-counter your speed in races for the puck on dump ins and skate through your entire team for an empty netter.

I'd have Guy at center because he was probably the best face-off man of them. Obviously, if he gets kicked out of the draw...........

Oh yeah. Brodeur in net to counter your dump ins and heck, maybe even score. Plus, he is cool as a cucumber.

Source(s): This team would be WAY better than the last team mentioned although I would consider Stevens or Lidstrom or Robinson or Doug Harvey and so on and so on BUT Pandolfo, Sillinger and Madden I laugh at. Other forwards that come to mind are Brindy, Gilmour, Lehtinen and Peca. Another counter would be to just put out 5 guys who can score on your empty net like Howe, Sakic, Richard, Orr and Leetch type of thing. Chelios is another guy that comes to mind. Also, you could consider some of those Russians of the 70's and 80's and could probably make a good team with just them. How about this: Kharlamov Federov or Krutov Makarov or Larionov Fetisov Vasiliev or Konstainov And of course Tretiak- there you go, all from one country and still better than the first one BY FAR.

LW-Jay Pandolfo(plays against the greats. i'm pretty sure he's played against lemiuex and gretzky. cuts off angles and dson't takes penalties)

C-John Madden(probably the best checking centerman ever)

RW-Mike Sillinger(he's also a great checking forwartd and he brings toughness. he's also a centerman and wins alot of draws in case mad dog gets kicked out)

RD-Scott Stevens(players are scared to cross the blue line when he's on the ice. he'll hit them but of course being part of the devils, is good at cutting off angles)

LD(i don't really know which side either of my d play)-Scott neidermayer(spelling?)(also a great defensman, play maker)

goalie-none other than marty brodeur (reasons:1. he's marty brodeur....what else do i have to say?? 2. he's a big time clutch player. he can shut out a team in the last minute easily. he's already done it alot this season)

yes it's basically all ne time devils. well that's because the devils are the most defensive team in the league. and with pandolfo and madden on the ice....your not gonna score

    this is easy C- S.Crosby RW-J.Staal LW- E. Malkin

    LD-Ryan. Whitney RD- S. Gonchar G- Marc-Andre Fleury

DUH! the youth atletcism of this team would destroy those old geezers above. Crosby is a playmaker, Malkin a scorer, Staal setup man and great on the back check with that long reach (7SHG) the sarge-great all around and whitney just because hell know where everyone is and isnt afraid to bloody someones mouth. The chemistry on this team is unbeatable the above "geezer team" would be so rusty and wouldnt have that natural chem. and the flower in net is unstoppable

He relatively would not have a large protecting mentality. He gets around for various susceptible-area blocks, yet that basically provides a lot. he's universal no longer too centred on protection and not usual for his stops.
