How can we get fast food restaurants to offer more vegetarian choices?

I had heard that Mcdonalds was test marketing a veggie burger, but now according to their website, they will not be adding a veggie burger to their menu. It seems that most sit down restaurants are now offering more vegetarian options then ever, while most fast food "burger" joints are getting rid of veggie options. Yes, places like Subway, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut are very veggie friendly, but I'm married to a meat eater and sometimes he wants a burger. Some Burger Kings offer a veggie burger, but not all. McDonalds, Wendys, and Arbys have stopped offering full size garden salads, in place of chicken topped salads. I just want to be able to order off the menu and not have explain my eating habits to the employees.

Sound off vegetarians..they will add it, if there is a demand.

FYI; It took *years* of pressure to get TB and Subway to become vegetarian friendly and Subway *still* refuses to make their wheat bread vegan safe! TB *is* the 'best' of the more typical fast 'food' places but they still have problems with some locations that add meat drippings to the beans or make the 7 layer with taco meat in it. I'll give TB corporate credit for responding to complaints about stores that do that though!

BK only started to offer a veggie burger after all the bad press they got over veal sandwiches and in most places the bun isn't really vegetarian! The stores have been told to nuke the patty (on request) but most stores still refuse to obey that simple request. Pizza Hut *ISN'T* veggie friendly! Even their breads (i.e. crusts) contain animal based ingredients, before you even begin to consider that their cheese uses animal enzymes.

McDonald's only tested a veggie burger as part of the lawsuit settlement over lying about the fries being veggie! Taco Bell went veggie friendly after dealing with veggies made sick by their food (I'm one of them). They *DON'T* (as a rule) respond to veggie market demand (there ain't enough of us); they respond to their insurance companies saying do something to stop these lawsuits or we'll ream you with premium increases.

When the question is fast 'food' the answer is at best accidentally vegetarian and if you mention vegan to them they tend to say "space aliens from Vega?"!

No, they will not add it if there is a demand.

However, they WILL add it if they see that another company's market share is going through the roof, and their analyst uncovers the reason: being vegan friendly.

I am not a total vegan, but I am an (Eastern) Orthodox Christian, and our fasts exclude most animal flesh.

I find Taco Bell the best choice overall. They will hold the cheese, add extra lettuce (for a charge) and make a Taco Salad without meat.

At Wendy's I can get a plain potato and a side salad. That's plenty for me at a sitting, and I am a big man.

Thankfully, I'm learning to plan my eating and not always do it on the spur of the moment. So I usually have a small cooler with me to keep my grazing food fresh.

More important than what we are eating is HOW MUCH we are eating. Look into the Longevity Diet, better health through calorie restriction.

If we were all eating what are body needs and not what we have taught our bodies to want, fast food businesses (as currently franchised) would go out of business.

If there is a Wild Oats Market nearby, try taking your boyfriend in there for a meal sometime. I get full just thinking about all the healthy choices that taste wonderful.

In order for the chains to offer vegan and veg options, there needs to be a consistent demand. That means people will need to go into McDonald's and purposely order their veggie burger. I'm not even vegetarian and you couldn't pay me to eat fast food!

I say pick your battles and instead focus on supporting local businesses and natural food restaurants.

You can order a veggie whopper at Burger King, though not all would know that means a whopper hold the burger part. Burger King tends to be know as the "have it your way" burger place. In truth that's not that much different than what Subway sells, so it shouldn't be difficult.

I'm pretty sure fast food restaurants are too worried about their lazy, unhealthy customers to do anything good for us. We should start a petition. Either that or every product that has animal bi-products or dairy products should have an advisory label on it, just like all those products that say "Warning: This product contains nuts". This way, it would be a lot easier for us to grab food on the go and not be tricked into eating anymore secret animal products.
