Why do you need to cheat in video games?

I have been playing since "Pong" first came out, and currently play "first person shooter" PC games like Halo, Gears Of War, Call Of Duty and such. I have never used "cheats" and never will, takes the fun out of gaming. Why does a loser need to cheat, just can't win, or does not want to spend time finding out how to beat the game?

Not everyone who uses cheats is doing it because they are incapable of finishing the game. Personally, I only use them on games I have already finished, when I may have missed something the first time through. Especially in RPG's, I may have missed a sidequest or two, and would like to complete them just for the story that goes with them, but I don't feel like leveling my character up from lv. 1 again. In this case, using a cheat does not detract from the gaming experience, since I have already experienced it.

Cheats are losing their value though, as games get more complex, and tend towards online where cheating is not allowed. In the old days, using a game genie to make Mario jump several stories in the air was great fun. Game coding is too complicated for some of that stuff nowadays.

Is this a strictly multiplayer question? Because cheating in multiplayer is pretty crappy, but in single player it isn't that bad... although I don't think you should unless you NEED it! Some people just don't have the dexterity you need to beat some video games and sometimes cheating makes the game fun if you've gotten bored with it!

For example in Halo2 (which I've played for months n months and still do) My friend has a modded xbox and he has a cheat where you can shoot "air shafts" out of a rocket launcher. So we make a chain of "air shafts" and fly around the level, it's really fun!

but if you're talking about multiplayer cheats I think they should not be used unless both(or all) players agree on it, they ruin gameplay drastically

I remember pong...definitely enjoyed my Odyssey 2 and my friend's Atari. Well, if you've not used a weapons cheat or character cheat in Grand Theft Auto Vice City, you don't know what you've been missing! There's one cheat for Vice City that causes a tank to appear suddenly for your use--too much fun blasting away characters and running over vehicles. One of the weapons cheats includes a flame thrower--lots of fun scorching the characters dancing at the Malibu Club. Another cheat makes all the characters try to attack you, with or without weapons. You can spend an entire game being a heavily armed sociopath rather than having to follow the story line. Cheats can add a lot of instant fun to what would be yet another story-based game.

I agree that cheats should only be used when you finish the video game, but sometimes, you're forced to choose between cheat, or do it yourself, I spent 7 years trying to finish a video-game, I forget what it's name was, but I think after 7 years of do-it-yourself action, and not moving on, I decided to use a cheat, but then I found out that there were no cheats and I spent 3 more years on the game, and beat it. I couldn't beat it in those 7 years because it adapted to my strategy, the enemies knew my moves and knew my combo's that was unfair.

I think cheats destroy the game. I loved playing delta force and then I got delta force 2 and I used cheats for some reason and I couldn't stop using them because I got lazy and so the game wasn't challanging of course and I didn't like the game. This has happened with other games and it sucks cause I would have enjoyed playing the game but once I use cheats, I can't help but use them.

Well, I don't use cheats everytime, after I found out all the needed things then I'll play again but this time I will use cheats, just for fun, the fun of not using cheats and using cheats is different, its up to the mood of the player

Cheats make ur game easy to finish some people love to cheat is because they coud'nt finish the game some cheats destroy ur game like for example i used my gameshark lite on my syphon filter 2 on the ps1 there's a part of the game where you have to blow out the rocks out of the cave using a time bomb but did the bomb exploded? no you know why cause i turned on the "never ending timer cheat" so what happends the bomb did not exploded neither did i finish the level!!! and that's really annoying so if i were you don't cheat if you finish the game its ok to cheat but if not do not cheat at all.

Some people like the feeling of being invincible. Some just play a game through the story and don't give a crap about the gameplay. Most, however, are just n00bs who can't find any other way to beat the game.

In instances one has limited skill in completing a certain level in the game, one might research on the web or ask friends how to complete that level. That said, cheat codes offer the loser a chance to redeem himself/herself to complete the game.

Cheat codes also enable the gamer to experiment with the mechanics of the game.
